Gregory J. Zipfel, MD, FAHA, FACS, FAANS (born February 2, 1969) is an American neurosurgeon and academic physician. He serves as the Ralph G. Dacey Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and as Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.[1] Zipfel is internationally recognized for his research on cerebrovascular disorders, particularly cerebral amyloid angiopathy, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, and dural arteriovenous fistulae.[2]
Early life and education
Zipfel was born on February 2, 1969, in Peoria, Illinois.[3] He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1991. He subsequently attended Northwestern University Medical School, graduating with distinction in 1995 with his Doctor of Medicine degree.[3]
He completed his neurosurgical residency at the University of Florida from 1995 to 2003, with an interruption from 1998 to 2000 during which he served as a Research Fellow at Washington University in St. Louis. Following his residency, Zipfel completed a Cerebrovascular Fellowship at University of Miami from 2003 to 2004.[3]
Career
After completing his training, Zipfel joined the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine in 2004. He progressed through the academic ranks, becoming Professor of Neurosurgery and Neurology. In 2019, he was appointed Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, succeeding his mentor Ralph G. Dacey Jr.[4]
In recognition of his contributions to the field, Zipfel was named the Ralph G. Dacey Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery in 2020.[3] He also holds appointments in the Department of Neurology and formerly served as the Director of the Cerebrovascular Surgery Program and Co-Director of the Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.[3]
Research
Zipfel's research program focuses on three primary areas of cerebrovascular disease:
Cerebral amyloid angiopathy
Zipfel has conducted extensive research on cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) and its relationship to dementia and intracerebral hemorrhage. His laboratory investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying vascular amyloid deposition and develops potential therapeutic interventions. This work has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 2005.[3][5]
Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
His work on aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has focused on understanding the mechanisms of delayed cerebral ischemia and developing neuroprotective strategies. Zipfel has investigated both surgical and endovascular treatment approaches for cerebral aneurysms.[6]
Dural arteriovenous fistulae
Zipfel founded and directs the CONDOR (Consortium for Dural arteriovenous fistula Outcomes Research), an international multi-institutional collaboration dedicated to improving the understanding and treatment of dural arteriovenous fistulae.[7] This consortium represents one of the largest collaborative efforts in cerebrovascular neurosurgery.[3]
Funding and publications
As of 2026, Zipfel has authored over 275 peer-reviewed scientific articles, 45 editorials and invited commentaries, and 13 book chapters.[3] As of September 2026, his work had been cited more than 19,000 times according to Google Scholar.[8] He currently holds three NIH grants as principal investigator: an R01, a K12 career development program, and a UE5 grant.[3]
Leadership and professional service
Zipfel has held numerous leadership positions in major neurosurgical organizations:[3]
- Society of Neurological Surgeons: President (2026–2027), Member of Executive Council[9][10]

- NREF: Vice President[11]
- American Academy of Neurological Surgeons: Chair of the Research Committee[12]
- NSA: Vice President[13]
He has served on and was the chair of the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgery.[3]
Career development programs
Zipfel directs multiple programs aimed at developing the next generation of neurosurgical researchers:[3]
- Principal Investigator and Director of the Neurosurgery Research Career Development Program (NRCDP), an NIH-funded K12 program[14]
