Gregory Williams
Gregory Williams, (born May 18, 1954) is an American musician, vocalist, producer, writer, and author most known for being the founding member and leader of Motown Records R&B act Switch.
Bio
Williams was raised in Grand Rapids, MI, where he worked with various bands. He joined R&B group TNT Flashers and under the management of Soul Unlimited Productions—owned by singer, songwriter Barry White—moved to Los Angeles. White changed the group name to "White Heat" and soon signed a deal with RCA Records. After recording one album, TNT Flashers were dropped from the label. Williams soon formed his own band, Switch, which included Phillip Ingram, Bobby Debarge, Tommy Debarge, Eddie Fluellen, and Jody Sims who were later signed to Motown Records (1977-1983).[1]
Switch became a multi-platinum selling group recording six albums for Motown where Williams served as musician, vocalist, writer, arranger and producer with "There'll Never Be", "I Call Your Name" and "Love Me Over and Over Again" becoming Top 40 singles. [2] After Motown, the remaining Switch members (Gregory Williams, Jody Sims, and Eddie Fluellen) signed with Total Experience Records recording one album before the disbanding of Switch.
Williams went on to play keyboard for Arista recording artist GQ and created GWM Productions. He also serves as Vice President of A&R for Tavdash Records/Jive Records (1987-1991). Following the A&R position, Williams worked as a contributor to "Right On!" magazine and as West Coast Coordinator of Sisters in Style Magazine (1993-2002) which included an "Ask A Man" advice column.
Williams formed, SWITCH Entertainment World, LLC, where he has managed various music artists including El Debarge and SWV; and serves as the booking and business contact for the group Switch who have reunited and resumed touring.
Personal Life Williams has one daughter, Autumn Williams, and resides in Georgia.
