Grema Sulaiman (born 26 January 1996) is a Nigerian energy expert known for his contributions to energy policy development in Nigeria.[1] He has served as the Director General of the Centre for Energy Investment and Innovation since January 2022.[2][3] Prior to this appointment as Director General, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of The Federation Media.[4][5]

Early life and education

Grema was born on 26 January 1996 in Lagos, Nigeria to the family of the late Alhaji Sulaiman Hamid.[6] He hails from a noble Shuwa Arab family originally from Maiduguri, Borno State.[7] He obtained his first school leaving certificate in Ogun State in 2007 before he proceeded to Dream Makers International College, Lagos, where he completed his secondary education.

In 2019, he obtained his first degree in Mass Communications, and then proceeded to complete the one-year mandatory youth service for all Nigerian graduates with the National Youth Service Corps in 2022. He later acquired a certification in Innovation Strategy and Leadership from the European Institute of Leadership and Management in Dublin, Ireland in 2023.

Career

In 2020, Grema served as the CEO of Federation Media, a digital media and production company in Nigeria.[8] In the same year, he founded Buyfuel, corporately (Buyfuel Trading Limited), Nigeria and Africa's first petro product E-commerce retail platform.[9] Subsequently, in 2021, he established The Centre for Energy Investment and Innovation,[10] a limited by guarantee organization that aims to promote sustainable energy practices and policies in Nigeria and was appointed as the Director General.[11]

Initiatives

On July 18, 2024, Grema proposed the Nigeria Energy Transition Fund (NETFUND).[12] An initiative which aims to attract Foreign direct investment into the country, structured under the CEII Foreign Investment Module, aligning with the renewed hope agenda of the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.[13] Grema pitched this agenda during the African Natural Resources and Energy Investment Summit (AFNIS24) held in the Aso Villa, Abuja in August of 2024.[14][15]

In 2023, Grema spearheaded the joint landmark agreement between The CEII and Synergy Infrastructure Development & Investment Limited (SIDIL), a collaboration that aims to champion decentralized energy provision for nationwide power generation in Nigeria.[16][17][18]
