Greyhound Original is a Thai fashion retail company known for its streetwear clothing and other lifestyle brands within the same company.[1] The Greyhound company was initially a fashion brand and later transitioned into a lifestyle brand with concept stores. Greyhound is known for its unique slogan, which has remained consistent since its creation.[1] As of November 2020, Greyhound Original operated in 6 different countries with over 60 stores under the various company brands.[1] The company is part of Mud & Hound PCL and was founded by Bhanu Inkawat.[1] Currently, in 2021, there are 3 fashion brands and 7 restaurants under the brand.[1]

History

The company was founded in 1980 by Bhanu Inkawat when it opened its first store in Siam Center.[2] It was called "Greyhound Original", like the company name, and it exclusively sold men's clothing. Later, the store expanded to sell women's clothing and accessories.[3] Eventually, the company changed into a lifestyle company when the first restaurant was built in 1998 alongside the shopping mall, The Emporium.[3] It is called "Greyhound Café" and, currently in 2021, it has over 18 stores worldwide, including Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and London.[3] After becoming a lifestyle brand, it began working on a new fashion brand.[3] In 2010, Smileyhound was opened as another fashion brand under the Greyhound Original brand.[3] In 2011, Greyhound opened its first branch outside of Thailand at IFC Mall in Hong Kong.[3] In 2012, more branches were opened in Hong Kong, and "GROUND-HÉY by Greyhound Café" was added to some branches of Greyhound Café.[3]

Marketing

Greyhound Original has used the slogan "Basic with a Twist" for over 40 years. All of the brands follow this slogan, maintaining a consistent theme in every store.[1]

In March 2018, Greyhound released its first collaboration with Pepsi.[4] The collection focused on the iconic colors of Pepsi and combined them with Greyhound Original's unique street style. The collection featured printed T-shirts, sweatshirts, bomber jackets, and bucket hats.[4]

In June 2019, during the event of the Democratic Design Day 2019 in Älmhult, Sweden, many future collaboration projects with IKEA were announced, including a collaboration project between IKEA and Greyhound Original.[5] It turned out that Michael Nikolic, the creative leader of IKEA, had shown interest in the Greyhound Original brand, asking Bhanu Inkawat, the Executive Creative Director of Greyhound Original, to meet with IKEA in Sweden and collaborate on a new project.[5]

Concept Stores

In addition to the Greyhound Original brand, the company also consists of eight different brands.

Smileyhound

Smileyhound is a brand under Greyhound that started from small collections and grew to its current size.[6] The brand focuses on basic, casual, and trendy streetwear clothes while including some of Greyhound's identity.[6]

Greyhound Café

In 1997, Greyhound Café opened its first store in Emporium Shopping Complex and instantly gained a lot of popularity.[3] Greyhound Café is a lifestyle café focused on creating iconic dishes for people living in Bangkok.[3] The restaurant was the first expansion of Greyhound from fashion to food and the beginning of Greyhound's transition into a lifestyle brand.[3] Currently, in 2021, there are 19 branches in Thailand and 18 branches in other countries.[7]

Another Hound Café

Another Hound Café is a restaurant that offers a dining concept combining Thai and Italian food.[8] Due to the similarities in taste between Thai and Italian food when it comes to spices, the restaurant creates dishes that mix the two tastes and create original food, rather than fusion food.[9] In 2005, Another Hound Café opened its first restaurant on the ground floor of Siam Paragon and, in 2015, it opened another restaurant at The Emporium.[9] Recently, it also opened another restaurant on level 5 of Central Embassy.[9]

Kin+Hey

Kin+Hey is a comfort food-style restaurant that serves Thai street food. The restaurant's theme is based on Izakaya or Pojangmacha from Korea and food vendors and markets in Thailand.[10] In 2012, Kin+Hey opened at selective branches in Bangkok, such as J Avenue, The Circle, and The Crystal.[10]

Gai Hound

Gai Hound mostly serves Hainanese chicken rice made with premium and organic ingredients. The chickens are homegrown and chosen specifically when they are a specific age. The vegetables are grown without any use of pesticides and with the use of pig's manure for fertilizer. The vegetables are also exported from King Fresh Farm, a company that produces organic vegetables known for high quality and has received many awards, such as GAP, USDA, ORGANIC, and EU ORGANIC.[11]

Sweet Hound

Sweet Hound is a dessert bar with a signature waffle menu. It has a slogan of "High Fashion Waffle with the best dressing in town". The dessert bar first opened in 2010 at J Avenue next to Greyhound Café.[12][3]

Greyhound Coffee

Greyhound Coffee is a coffee shop under the Greyhound brand. It started as a request from A.P. Honda to find a way to attract people to the motor show event. After 15 branches were opened under A.P. Honda's contract, the requirement to only open in CUB House was dropped, and Greyhound Coffee was allowed to open independently. As a result, Greyhound Coffee became a franchise. In 2020, Greyhound Coffee opened 2 new branches at The Mall Ngamwongwan and Central Festival Eastville, alongside Greyhound Café, to help the brand grow in its early stage. As of now, there is a plan to open 3 more branches in the future.[13]

Ban Hound(Online)

Ban Hound is a new brand created as a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic and is part of Greyhound Café.[14] Most of the food can be ordered online and some can be ordered as takeaway from the restaurant.[14] The menu consists of simple food usually cooked at home and is cheaper than most food from Greyhound Café.[14]
