Plot
Suresh and Mahim were two childhood friends, but there was a big difference between their livelihood and religion. Mahim, the son of a poor family with a small hut and little land, returned to his village. He had to rely on Suresh for further studies because Suresh's parents were very rich. Suresh is a doctor while Mahim was waiting for the results of his law examination. At one point, Mahim’s marriage to a Brahmin girl named Achala was verbally arranged by her father. Suresh doesn't like this, so he wants to go to Achala's house to save his friend from this arrangement. But instead, Suresh fell in love with her at first sight. So he used one excuse or another to go to Achala's house and finally, Suresh was able to persuade his father to arrange his marriage with her. But still, she was able to escape from her house and marries Mahim and moves to his village. But sadly, Mrinalini suspects Mahim of having an affair with another girl. Meanwhile, when Suresh went to Mahim's village, one night Mahim's house caught fire. At Achala's request, Mahim sends Achala back to his parents' house with Suresh. This time, Mahim was suffering from a high fever and Suresh treated him and later took care of him. They decided to change the weather, but Suresh picked up Mahim on another train and deliberately forced Achala to come with him. The situation identified them as husband and wife, which they could not accept. Eventually, Suresh contracted the plague, and Suresh died while visiting the affected area. Mahim and Achala reunite, overcoming all their confusion.

Production
After reading the novel, Uttam Kumar loved it and wanted to make the film. Then film shooting started in 1964. Before the film, Suchitra Sen’s health was very ill. She suffered from jaundice. She became thin and slim. When she just recovered, Uttam came immediately to offer her the role and she agreed.
The role of Suresh, Uttam Kumar’s first choice was Soumitra Chatterjee. He offered him the role, but Soumitra didn't like the script; he didn't want to do this villain role, so he refused it. But he and Satyajit Ray came to the shooting spot also.
Then the role of Suresh, Uttam approached Pradeep Kumar, who was a busy actor in Hindi cinema at that time. But he agreed to do the role for Uttam Kumar.
One day during the production, Suchitra wasn't doing the shooting, then the director asked her what happened? She told him her mood was off. That Uttam was on another set for shooting. The director immediately told him that Suchitra wasn't shooting today. Then Uttam immediately came to the set and convinced her. Then shooting began.[1]
