GrokStyle was founded in Ithaca, NY..[1] by Sean Bell and Kavita Bala in 2015[2], building on their work together researching visual search at Cornell University[3][4][5][6]. Shortly after, the company moved to San Francisco. In May of 2016, Bell and GrokStyle won the LDV Vision Summit Entrepreneurial Computer Vision Challenge[7]. In January of 2017, the company had been named one of the 100 most promising startups in AI by CB Insights[8].

GrokStyle announced a $1.76 million seed round of funding from sources including Amino Capital, Canaan Partners, Neuron.VC, Red Bear Angels, and several ex-Googlers in April of 2017[9]. Later that year, the company won a second grant from the National Science Foundation, for total of more than $950,000 received from NSF[10][11]. In March of 2018, GrokStyle was announced as the visual search technology used by IKEA’s Place augmented reality app[12]. Kavita Bala continues to be a professor at Cornell[13]

Through GrokStyle’s platform, shoppers use images from their phones, the internet or other sources to[14] identify visually similar items and related products from a retailer’s catalog.[15]
