Groove synthesis
From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki
The groove synthesis is the synthesis of alkyl halide from alcohols via treatment at high temperatures with hydrogen halide in the presence of anhydrous zinc chloride as a catalyst. Concentrated HCl + anhydrous ZnCl2 is known as Lucas reagent.
R–OH + HX ————ZnCl2————> R-X + H2O 300°C
Reactivity order: HI > HBr > HCl > HF 3° > 2° > 1° > MeOH.
2° and 3° alcohols undergo SN1; 1° and MeOH undergo SN2 mechanism.
