Groupe Burrus
Groupe Burrus is a European insurance group, founded in 1923 in Strasbourg (France).
History
After World War I, Alsace returned to France after 53 years of German annexation. The dominant German insurance companies ended their presence, and Maurice Burrus saw an opportunity for a new company. In 1923, he founded Est Capitalisation (ESCA) in Strasbourg.

His family had made its fortune through the tobacco company F. J. Burrus, today British American Tobacco, in Switzerland.[1]

After a difficult start, the company became successful and built in 1932 an office building in Strasbourg, today under monument protection.[2]

They sold mostly life, disability and funeral expenses insurances, and later wealth management for rich families. They worked together with insurance brokers to expand their business to all of France. Between 1975 and 1989 their sales volume grew tenfold. In 1991, Christian Burrus, a relative of Maurice, took over the management. He bought a series of smaller companies and merged with bigger ones: AFI Europe, with business in Belgium, Italy and Luxembourg, Diot, an insurance broker, and LSN, specialized in notaries, and Siaci, an insurance broker too.[3][4][5] Note: notaries in France are active in property and finance. The new company Diot-Siaci is the leading European insurance broker, and among the 10 leading worldwide. Besides their traditional offering, they provide in 2022 insurances for companies: workforce, facilities and liability risk.
The Groupe Burrus Technologies is the IT company of the group.[6][7][8][9]
An organization chart of the company can be found here [10].
