Grouptherapy (stylized as grouptherapy.) is a rap/R&B music collective based in Los Angeles, California. The group was formed in 2019 by Coy Stewart, Tyrel Jackson Williams, Jadagrace Gordy-Nash, and Elijah Johnson before Johnson departed in 2020.

Career[edit]

Formation and early releases (2019–early 2020)[edit]

Prior to the formation of grouptherapy., friends Coy Stewart, Tyrel Jackson Williams, Jadagrace Gordy-Nash, and Elijah Johnson experimented with music creation, mainly as a hobby. The friends were drawn together by their shared experiences as child stars: Stewart and Williams started out as young actors, while Gordy-Nash and Johnson had early music careers of their own.

In late 2019, grouptherapy. was announced on each member's social media[1][2][3], and grouptherapy.'s social media pages were created. Shortly after the announcement, the song "Exercise" by KOI (Stewart) and TJW (Williams) was released on the grouptherapy. YouTube channel. In October, grouptherapy. began releasing short two-track EPs from individual group members, starting with Yikes / Ice Chips by KOI, with an appearance from TJW. A month after, Jadagrace made her grouptherapy. debut with Bounce / Glow, featuring KOI. Homecoming / Nighttime by RHEA was released in late January, with features from TJW and Diamond White. The group members began teasing a solo release from TJW titled "Powerball" on April 2, 2020. Once the release day arrived, fans were surprised by an 8-song EP, this is not the album. The EP featured all previously released songs (except "Exercise"), as well as two new songs, "Powerball" and "Update", by TJW.

"Season II" and there goes the neighborhood. (mid–late 2020)[edit]

Following the killing of George Floyd on Memorial Day 2020, grouptherapy. participated in an artist and influencer blackout, putting all music releases and social media interaction on hold, save those related to promoting racial justice and police reform.[4][5][6] On July 9, 2020, grouptherapy. released "raise it up!", their first song after the release of their debut EP and their first song credited only to grouptherapy. and not any individual artist, although the song primarily features Jadagrace.[7]

In early September, grouptherapy. released the music video for "raise it up!"[8] They also announced "season II" and an impending announcement. Elijah Johnson ("RHEA") seemingly left the group between the release of "raise it up!" and the "season II" announcement. On September 11, grouptherapy. announced their second project, there goes the neighborhood. The song "blackout." was released as the lead single from the mixtape on September 29.[9] Two weeks later, "watercolor." was released as another promo single from the tape.[10] On October 30, there goes the neighborhood, grouptherapy.'s 13-track debut mixtape, was released on all streaming platforms.[11] The mixtape featured songs "blackout." and "watercolor." as well as "raise it up!".[12]
