Guangao Cabin (traditional Chinese: 觀高山屋; simplified Chinese: 观高山屋; pinyin: guān gāo shān wū) is an accommodation mountain hut in Taiwan's Yushan National Park, at an altitude of 2,575 metres (8,448 ft).[9] It is located in Sinyi Township, Nantou County. It is situated at the 14.6 kilometer mark of the western section of the Batongguan Traversing Trail, and is an important rest stop for several hiking routes, including the South Section 2 of the Central Mountain Range, Mabolasi Hiking Route, Badaxiu, and the Batongguan Traversing Trail.[5][9] It was opened to the public after its completion in 2025.[7][8]
There are 3 indoor dormitories, each with 14 beds, providing a total of 42 beds for hikers.[5][8] There is a lounge, a clothing hanging room, and a simple cooking area. An improved eco-toilet is available outdoors.[5][10] The facility uses renewable energy to generate electricity for its own use and is equipped with a lithium-ion battery energy storage system to balance intermittent renewable energy. A mobile phone charging area is set up. There are portable altitude chambers (PACs), first aid kits, and other emergency medical equipment.[5][10] Administrators provide services to hikers and handle mountain accidents.[10][7]
Interior design and functions
Recycling of materials and environmentally friendly construction
The old wooden bed frame inside the old Guangao Work Station was dismantled and reassembled in the Guangao Cabin for use.[11][3] In terms of timber use, the timber with the least impact in the nearby forest was carefully assessed, cut, and dried according to the required size, then coated with wood varnish and combined with a stainless steel frame to form the dining table and chairs of the mountain house. The resource reuse practices gave new life to the discarded old materials.[7][12]
Entrance platform
Before entering the Guangao Cabin, there is an entrance platform where hikers can change out of muddy hiking boots and into indoor slippers to keep the cabin dry. Inside, there are large floor-to-ceiling windows in the lounge, creating a spacious feel. There is also a transparent skylight above the walkway, which brings in natural light and provides a comfortable feeling.[8][13]
The four characters “觀高山屋” at the entrance were written by the calligraphy master Ku-Mo Lee.[13] The entrance hall adopts a high ceiling design to make the space more spacious and bright,[3] and also has a wooden shoe cabinet.[13]
Multi-functional lounge
It can be used for dining, resting, and enjoying the scenery. The lounge has floor-to-ceiling windows, providing ample natural light during the day and offering panoramic views of the surrounding forest. At night, an off-grid solar energy storage system provides power for lighting and USB charging for mobile phones.[5][10][12]
The roof above the corridor connecting the lounge and the dormitories uses a semi-transparent hollow panel to absorb sunlight or moonlight, so as to reduce the use of lighting fixtures and save energy. Topographical maps and cross-sectional views of the park's trails are placed on both sides of the corridor, as well as ecological photos and landscape photos of the park taken by conservation volunteers.[9][8][13]
Dormitory
There are three dormitories that can accommodate 14 people each.[5][10] The beds in the dormitories are equipped with partitions and memory foam mattresses, which can reduce sleep disturbances and improve sleep quality.[13][8][10][12]
Clothing hanging room
Referring to the practice of Japanese mountain huts,[13] a clothing hanging room is added, in which wet shoes and clothes can be placed to keep the indoor humidity stable and make people feel comfortable, achieving the effect of "dry and wet separation."[13][9] Otherwise, if damp items are brought into the room, the indoor humidity will increase, causing discomfort. In addition, in order to keep the indoor floor clean and facilitate the movement of hikers between indoor and outdoor areas, indoor and outdoor slippers are provided at the entrance.[13][10][12]
Water supply
Water is drawn from a nearby water source to the cabin. There are six water towers next to the mountain hut, which can supply the mountain hut for several days when full.[12]
Simple cooking area
The cooking area is also equipped with an oil separator to separate oil from water in order to avoid edible oil from polluting the surrounding ecological environment.[5][10]
Japanese rain chains
Japanese rain chains[14][15] are installed on the eaves to collect rainwater for drainage, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the landscape.[8][13] Rain chains are a common drainage system in Japanese architecture, such as temples. They are decorative and still have a good drainage effect. They are often seen in courtyards or at the entrance of rooms. They are a string of copper beads that look like wind chimes, and their shapes are mostly flowers, rings, cups, etc. This design makes modern buildings like mountain huts full of a romantic and traditional atmosphere, and more Zen-like.[16][8][13]
Portable altitude chamber (PAC)
In environments above 1,500 meters, low air pressure may have some impact on humans. If the ascent speed is not properly adjusted and the body reaches an altitude above 2,500 meters before adaptation, anyone may suffer altitude sickness, including normally very healthy adults.[17][18][19][20][21]
Portable pressurized chambers (PACs)[22][23][24][25] can be used to treat symptoms of physical discomfort caused by a high-altitude environment, such as acute mountain sickness (AMS), high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), and high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), in order to gain time to wait for rescue or descend the mountain as soon as possible.[8][13]
Mobile phone charging area
There is a mobile phone charging area with USB and Type-C ports on the wall, where hikers can plug in and use their mobile phones and power banks to charge.[8][13]

Energy and electric power systems

The solar panels (PV) generate electricity, which is then used to charge the energy storage system (ESS) via the MPPT. The inverter then extracts the power from the ESS to supply electricity to the load.
Energy supply in high-altitude areas has been a difficult problem due to the difficulty of grid connection. Off-grid solar energy storage systems have been proven to be a feasible renewable energy solution.[26][27] Therefore, during the building design phase of Guangao Cabin, the Yushan National Park Headquarters, C. J. Yan Architect & Associate, and Super Double Power Technology discussed the installation of solar and energy storage systems for the mountain house.[3][6][28] With the opening of Guangao Cabin in 2025, the off-grid solar energy storage system will also be put into operation at the same time.[7]
When completed in 2025, the off-grid solar energy storage system will have a power architecture consisting of solar arrays generating electricity, charging the energy storage system via MPPT, and inverters supplying AC 110 V loads. For the energy storage system, lithium iron phosphate batteries[29] were used for system setup.
Improved eco-toilet

It uses a composting method to minimize pollution.
Outside the cabin is an improved eco-toilet that uses a composting method to minimize pollution.[6][10][12] The eco-toilet built in 2025 is used by the mountain hut manager to cover the feces with humus from the forest and stir it, so that it ferments and decomposes on the spot and eventually returns to the forest, turning the feces into a part of nature.[11][30][31]
In 2003, the Yushan National Park Headquarters commissioned the Industrial Technology Research Institute to conduct research on the technology and monitoring of eco-toilets along the main peak of Yushan. Subsequent improvements were then carried out by a team of conservation volunteers (Tai-Jung Chi et al.).[11][30][31]
Geography

Guangaoping is located 14.6 kilometers from the western section of the Batongguan Traversing Trail. It is an important rest stop for multiple hiking routes, including the South Section 2 of the Central Mountain Range, the Mabolasi Hiking Route (Badaxiu included), the Batongguan-Yushan North Peak Route, and the Batongguan Traversing Trail, all of which converge here.[5][9]
Guangao Cabin is about 160 meters from Guangaoping. It can be reached by following the signs after passing through the temporary helicopter landing pad along the path next to Guangaoping.[7][12]
Service
Regarding the management of mountain huts and the application for beds: applications for beds in the Guangao Cabin can be submitted through the "Hike Smart Taiwan Service." The administrators work in shifts every seven days and are responsible for tasks including operating portable pressurized chambers (PACs), keeping the environment inside and outside the mountain huts clean, simple trail maintenance, ensuring the stability of the water and electricity supply system, and promoting mountaineering safety and Leave No Trace principles. In addition, the administrators will also assist hikers in using the mountain hut facilities correctly, arrange beds, provide information on the status of trails, itinerary consultation, and park entry checks, etc.[3][10][12]
After completion in 2025, it began trial operation on April 1 of the same year, providing 28 beds,[4][5][10] and officially began charging operations on December 1, providing 42 beds.[5][8][10]
Old Guangao Work Station
In the 1990s, the Guangao Mountaineering Service Station, also known as the old Guangao Work Station, located next to the Junda Forest Road, served as both a place for patrol personnel to stay and a refuge for mountain enthusiasts. It was located at a different site than the Guangao Cabin, with a distance difference of about 500 meters between them.[2]
In its early years, the Guangao Mountaineering Service Station was used as a logging measurement room for the Forestry Bureau (renamed as the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency in 2023), providing accommodation and work opportunities for Forestry Bureau personnel in the mountains. After the logging work ended, the building was left vacant for a long time. In 1990, the Yushan National Park Headquarters leased the building from the Forestry Bureau as a mountain hut and rebuilt it into a reinforced concrete building to provide accommodation or refuge for mountain enthusiasts.[32][33] The Guangao Mountaineering Service Station could accommodate 60 people and is a must-pass place on the Batongguan Historic Trail to the main peak of Yushan (Mt. Jade). It had a solar power system for electricity, water supply, public toilets, and other facilities. It was one of the well-equipped mountain huts in the Yushan mountain range area and was used very frequently.[32] About 5,000 to 6,000 mountain climbers pass through this place every year.[11]
The South Section 2 of the Central Mountain Range, Mabolasi Hiking Route, Badaxiu, and Batongguan Traversing Trail converge here,[6][10] and long-distance hikers mostly used the Guangao Mountain Service Station as their first rest stop. After the 921 earthquake in 1999 and Typhoon Morakot in 2009, the foundation of the site subsided, causing the building structure to tilt and crack.[32][6][10] The Forestry Bureau announced the closure of the station on September 15, 2010.[2][7][12][34]
Construction history
Guangao is an important rest and supply point for many hiking routes. The mountain huts (Lele Cabin and Central Gold Mine Cabin) along the route are too far apart, so hikers usually needed to bring their own tents when they came to Guangao for rest. Before the completion of Guangao Cabin in 2025, hikers still arranged to stay overnight in Guangao, which was prone to potential dangers.[35][2][36][37] In order to provide hikers with comfortable and safe accommodation and refuge facilities, the Yushan National Park Headquarters carried out site selection and planning design work for the construction of small mountain huts near Guangao from 2013 to 2014, and prepared a budget for construction.[2][38] The project was suspended due to an insufficient budget and the inability of helicopters to cooperate with the construction.[34]
In 2019, Taiwan's "Open Forests" policy was implemented,[39][40][41][42] and the Yushan National Park Headquarters reconsidered the possibility of building the Guangao Cabin. The Guangao Cabin Construction Project was restarted, and in conjunction with the overall renovation project of the mountain huts in the National Park's Medium-term Plan. The scale was expanded from the original small refuge mountain hut to a medium-sized mountain hut that can accommodate 52 people and 12 people in tents.[6][5][12][34][43] During the process, after multiple geological surveys, a geologically stable area was finally found that was not easily damaged by earthquakes or heavy rains, ensuring that the mountain hut could operate stably for a long time and ensure the safety of hikers. In addition, the water source was considered, ensuring the mountain hut has enough water resources. The site was finally selected about 160 meters away from Guangaoping. This location met evaluation criteria, being close to the helicopter landing pad and connecting to multiple hiking routes, which was quite convenient.[7][12]
In 2020, the Yushan National Park Headquarters commissioned C. J. Yan Architect & Associate to plan and design the Guangao Cabin.[3][6][28] In November 2022, the project was contracted out to Jisheng Construction Co., Ltd. to begin construction of the Guangao Cabin on-site in the mountains.[2][44] The off-grid solar energy storage system was constructed by Super Double Power Technology Co., Ltd.[7] During the construction of the cabin, there were two design changes[45][46] and two additional construction items.[47][48] The cabin was completed in 2025, with a total construction cost of approximately NT$67.15 million (US$2.15 million).[5]
Difficulties and accidents during construction
High-altitude transport has always been a major problem in high-altitude engineering. The trail from the Dongpu trailhead to Guangaoping is 14.6 kilometers long.[49] Taiwan's seismic characteristics, coupled with Typhoon Morakot, have caused landslides, rockfalls, and crisscrossing streams in this section.[5] The original plan was to use manpower and transport vehicles to transport materials along the “Dongpu-Guangaoping” trail. If terrain obstacles were encountered, cable cars would be used to cross them.[2][3] The trail was in a bad state of collapse, which led to the number of cable car locations originally planned to increase from 7 to 12. There were even several places with serious collapses and bad terrain, making it impossible to install cable cars, causing serious problems in material transportation.[35][2][3][12]
To overcome the material transportation problem, the Yushan National Park Headquarters, after extensive consultations, increased its budget by more than NT$20 million (US$0.625 million) and commissioned Daily Air Corporation to use helicopters to transport building materials.[49][5][12] Meanwhile, the National Air Service Corps, Ministry of the Interior dispatched UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters with 4,000 horsepower to assist in the construction of the Guangao Cabin, hoisting large building materials and machinery to the new Guangao Mountain area, carrying out about 15 trips and transporting about 6.5 tons of materials.[50][35][2][2][51] The Aviation and Special Forces Command also dispatched helicopters.[35][2][34] This change in transportation methods required the design and construction units to readjust the dimensions and weight of materials to accommodate the helicopter cabin volume. For example, some longer steel columns and beams needed to be readjusted and disassembled into smaller components to facilitate air transport. Other components, such as H-beams, C-beams, floor slabs, and interior and exterior walls, were pre-assembled at the foot of the mountain. Each component was marked with a corresponding color and code to ensure that the materials could be aligned and locked according to the corresponding color and code after they were brought up the mountain, just like "assembling model toys." In terms of on-site construction, bolt locking was used instead of electric welding to fix each structural component to avoid being limited by electricity shortage problems during construction.[12]
Helicopters were used to transport large building materials,[2][5] and smaller construction materials, tools, equipment, food, etc., still had to be carried by manpower. Most construction workers and professional engineers walked to the Guangao construction site. Construction workers usually stayed on the mountain for more than two weeks each time, and sometimes even more than one month.[11] They worked hard to catch up on the high mountain where the temperature difference between day and night was large, and it was cold. With the joint efforts of many units and related personnel, a green energy mountain hut that did not significantly affect the surrounding ecological environment was completed in early 2025.[12]
In August 2024, a mountain hut renovation worker suffered a recurrence of an old injury to his left foot, which worsened to the point of suppuration and bone exposure, leaving him unable to move. He then suddenly developed a fever. After his fellow workers made an emergency call, the National Air Service Corps dispatched an air service helicopter to rescue him. The injured man was successfully taken to the hospital.[11][43]
Ecological environment protection
To avoid the potential impact of the construction of the Guangao Cabin on the surrounding ecological environment, an ecological buffer zone was set out 15 meters away from the cabin.[12] At the same time, in 2021, the Yushan National Park Headquarters commissioned the Formosan Wild Sound Conservation Science Center to carry out ecological verification work,[5][52] and to provide timely feedback on the potential ecological impacts at all stages of the project from planning and design to construction. According to the infrared camera data from the ecological verification project, the area is rich in ecological resources. For example, wild animals such as the Formosan black bear, Taiwan serow, Formosan sambar deer, and Reeves' muntjac can be found in the Guangaoping area.[9][7] After four years of continuous monitoring, the status of flora and fauna and habitat access have not been affected and are in good condition. Next, the environmental impact of the subsequent opening and use of the Guangao Cabin should be carefully assessed. For example, the treatment of kitchen waste and domestic sewage from the cabin, the high-altitude ecological toilet, and its maintenance and management. The Yushan National Park Headquarters will formulate relevant strategies based on the Leave No Trace principle to ensure the sustainability of the environment in the area and avoid human-wildlife conflicts.[5][7][12]
Mountain disaster rescue
In December 2024, a hiker climbing the South Section 2 of the Central Mountain Range alone slipped and fell 50 meters down a slope, suffering multiple abrasions and contusions. After being found by the mountain search and rescue team, they took turns carrying him to the Guangao Cabin.[53][54]
In April 2025, a storm in the mountainous area caused a large number of trees to collapse, interrupting traffic on 9.8 kilometers of the western section of the Batongguan Traversing Trail. More than 10 hikers were trapped and the Guangao Cabin served as a refuge. The Yushan National Park Headquarters sent people to repair and open a temporary trail to help the hikers escape.[49]
In October 2025, due to torrential rain in the mountains, the hikers' equipment was soaked. They suffered from hypothermia and were unable to move. The administrator of the Guangao Cabin went to assist, and the two hikers arrived safely at the Guangao Cabin. After resting overnight, the hikers descended the mountain on their own.[55]
