Guangfo (广佛), sometimes Guangfo Pole (广佛同城) is a term in increased usage to denote the proximity of highly developed central districts of large cities of Foshan and Guangzhou, which is unlike any other pair in the Pearl River Delta, and they have potential to fully amalgamate into each other, becoming its dominant urban cluster. Urban planning is increasingly treating the two cities as a combined metropolis, despite having separate administration, but this seems to be an ongoing infrastructure process, as of 2022. This is also in contrast to the greater delta region, which still contains plenty of pockets of undeveloped land, and as such, makes the region hard to consider as a unitary metropolitan area, as it has no single focal city. Shenzhen is generally not considered a part of the same metro region as Guangzhou, Dongguan has virtually no downtown but a collection of smaller towns, there is large break in land development and population density, by Chinese standards betwwen these areas. Western side of the Pearl River Delta is even less developed than Eastern side. Guangfo Line, Guangfo Bridge, and Guangfo Ring Road are among the expanding list of projects named after this concept. Both cities have a very large hinterland and suffer from Super commuter strain, with an impetus in reducing that via centralization and infrastructure upgrades.
