Khalil Mahusa Dunham-Carson pronounced [K-aa-LIY-L or K-AA-Liy-L †] means friend (born on July 8th, 1997). known professionally as Guccc, is an American rapper, songwriter, and performer. His earlier stage name was Guccci Goggles ("PSU Favorite") during the time he attended, and completed his four years as a psychology graduate on the main campus of Pennsylvania State University. Considered among one of the most notable Penn State figures of all time, he built his rap career around the notion of simply being himself- while wearing a signature pair of Gucci ski goggles during his attendance of exorbitant, and exclusive fraternity parties. On March 28th, 2017, Guccc introduced his first independent mainstream single titled I Need a Jawn, gaining swift traction across the Penn State campus reaching more than 70,000 new students that year. After establishing an immediate fanbase, Guccc created a pleasant interpretation of appreciating, & living life to its fullest through his unique single titled "Free Greek Life," which received positive media success after the wake of the largest hazing prosecution in United States history that resulted in the unfortunate, and untimely death of a young Penn State sophomore student. Guccc later released his critically acclaimed single FTK ("For the Kids"), which also gained considerable widespread radio success- initially created too motivate his peers for the highly anticipated THON: PSU Dance Marathon. FTK was also featured on ESPN's the Golic & Wingo radio, and television morning show on July 5th, 2018, helping to solidify his bright, and celebrated emergence in the music industry.
Early Life[edit]
Born and raised in New Haven, Connecticut, Guccc is of Gullah Geechee, Barbadian, and Trinidadian decent. An only child to mother, Nafeesah Hope, a business owner, and father, Nate Pearson, an operational supervisor. Guccc received a vigorous public education, and attended Wexler Grant Elementary in New Haven, Connecticut, along with Amistad Middle School, and Amistad High School, where he was once an active, and valuable defensive guard in lacrosse, and varsity basketball. Guccc was in high school when he first started rapping. He used to freestyle at lunch table cyphers which created his fueling desire to perfect his cadence, style, and context. Guccc was a spotlight student that balanced his priorities, however, he had an adoration for Nike Air Jordan sneakers, and collected them as part of his hobby; in conjunction to passionately volunteering for community services such as a volunteer senior Chess club role-model for the youth. He also studied vigorously within the academia realm by earning a 3.5 GPA. Guccc avid love for video games gave him a deeper appreciation for beats, and instrumentals eventually formulating a new, mature, and uncommon sound for his future music career. Guccc accredits his strong family unit due to being introduced to a plethora of academic, and non-academic experiences that allowed him too embrace his many multi-talents. Guccc would later form a rap group at the tender age of 14 called SvR (Team Severe) where he adopted the stage name PaiN. Guccc had an evolution of stage names beginning with, SvR Pain, R.I.P. Pain, Goat Pain, Pain X, then Guccci Goggles, and last but not least, his current alias, Guccc.
Music Career[edit]
I Need a Jawn
Guccc regularly performed his single, I Need a Jawn, and had his song freely played in various fraternities like Phi Who (Phi Kappa Theta). ATO (Alpha Tau Omega), BSB (Beta Sigma Beta) AEPI, (Alpha Omicron Pi), ACACIA, DU (Delta Upsilon), Lambda Chi, AGR (Alpha Gamma Pho), SAE (Sigma Alpha Epsilon), TKE (Tau Kappa Epsilon), Alpha Sigma Phi, DSIG (Delta Sigma Phi), Chi Phi, and more. Also, Guccc had the honor to perform for Pi Beta Phi and Zta (Zeta Tau Alpha) philanthropies even in hopes to raise awareness for charity. Guccc even performed in local campus stores like College Pizza showcasing his songs I Need a Jawn for their night life parties. In I Need a Jawn, the song highlights some of the sororities at Penn State such as Pi Phi (Pi Beta Phi), Gamma Phi Beta, AOP (Alpha Omicron Pi), KD (Kappa Delta), Alpha Phi, Theta (Kappa Alpha Theta), Kappa Kappa Gamma, ASA (Alpha Sigma Alpha), and ZTA (Zeta Tau Alpha).
FTK ("For the Kids")
Guccc was encouraged to conceive yet another song for his peers to help young children inflicted with short, and long-term disease and illnesses for charity. Thus, FTK ("For the Kids") was born. According to Guccc "... the song was made to bring awareness to the world, and to get people to support something bigger than themselves, a charitable cause […] but to also give the kids, and my fanbase a fun, enthusiastic song to dance too for THON since people are standing up for THON for 48 hours." FTK was performed all around the Penn State campus through events like Miles for Smiles, another notable charity event hosted by THON. Songs like FTK respectively shaped the Penn State culture, and the "Greek Life" perspective- since Guccc was able to get these songs on radio stations like Excitementradio.com, and Lion 90.7 FM (Penn State radio station.)
Pennsylvania State University
All of Guccc's radio, television, and print interviews constituted a great deal of positive attention from his peers and was inevitably voted as "One of the most recognizable person you'll see if you attend PSU" according to the Odyssey, an online Penn State newspaper, reputable upon his peers, and faculty members in regards to the Penn State campus life. He was also identified as a leader, and Penn State icon by the Black Student Union, due to an exceptional representation of a hip-hop/rap artist that attended their school. He graced the Daily Collegian newspaper on a few occasions, and assembled a substantial amount of credible accolades leading up to one of the biggest milestones Guccc has achieved thus far. Guccc's good reputation led him to open up at the Monster Energy Up & Up Festival for a major music influencer by the name of DJ Slushii. Guccc was chosen to be the special guest in one of the hottest clubs on the Penn State campus called "the Basement," due to all of the hype, and buzz that he acquired throughout his tenure at Penn State.
The name Guccci Goggles pioneered Guccc's musical legacy at Penn State University, forever stamping his name in their prestigious scholastic history. According to Guccc, his musical objective is to "... make a new and stronger legacy that gets world recognition instead of only campus stardom." Thus, the name change. Guccc decided to evolve, rebrand, and detach himself from his past epithet "Guccci Goggles," due to wanting too establish his own brand. His fans would often greet Guccc with a catch phase asking, "What's Guccci?" which refers to the expression of "what's good?" but the pronunciation typically was misconstrued with the Gucci fashion company despite having no affiliation. Many of Guccc's die hard fans were actually the ones whom nicknamed him "Guccc," because of his old respective name Guccci Goggles.
Are you Ready? Studio Album
Graduating from Penn State University with a psychology degree obtained during the years of 2015-2019; Guccc recently renovated his dedication to the music industry directly after graduating- by establishing a more stable, and dominant presence on popular social media platforms, and streaming services such as Spotify, Tidal, iHeartradio, Pandora, Apple iTunes, Datpiff, and much more. Guccc made his new debut album titled "Are you Ready?" in the comfort of his home studio. Throughout this process, he did all of his own songwriting, mixing, and mastering in a timely manner due to popular demand. Guccc lyrics are now on Rap Genius for his latest and first ever professional album.
Musical Style[edit]
Guccc influences varies significatly. Guccc has been inspired by different artists due to their speciality. According to Guccc, "... Soulija Boy creates fun- catchy songs that your'e suppose to dance too, Chief Keef is actually a great example that anyone can make it out of the hood or any place considered "dangerous," you can hear it in his voice [...] that he has a strong rapping voice, but this doesn't discourage him from being harmonic and melodic in his songs. Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Drake are Guccc's mainstream artists that have heavily influenced him due to being well established, creative artists, with longevity. Lastly, artists like Lil B, Migos, Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, and Gucci Mane inspires Guccc too remain authentic for his fans, "...they give that rage-rave-hype, yet energetic dance vibe that let people have fun and let lose," says Guccc. All of these artists influenced Guccc to be the versatile artist that he is now. Guccc rap style has been compared to Childish Gambino, Drake, Lil Wayne, and 50 Cent, a mixture of aggressive, fast tempo, club bangers, conceptual topics, and strong lyricism. Guccc uses his many life experiences to concoct clever, witty, punchlines, and catchy bars to create a valid imagery of the portrait he wants to convey throughout his music. Despite all of the major influences stated above, Guccc indisputably possess his own composition, and sound that is recognized as undoubtedly rare, and can not be duplicated.
