Gudmund Stokke is a Norwegian architect, who graduated from the University of Manchester in England in 1975. He is the founder and managing director of Nordic Office of Architecture AS, previously known as Narud-Stokke-Wiig Architects and Planners AS.

He is well-known for leading the architectural planning and design of Oslo Airport (OSL) as a part of the partership Aviaplan AS (discontinued in 2005), which was completed in 1998. He has been responsible for the design of all subsequent expansions of OSL, as well as at several other airport facilities in Norway and abroad, such as Bergen Airport, Stockholm Airport, Rajiv Gandhi Airport in Hyderabad (India), and Istanbul Airport in Turkey, which opened in 2019. Stokke also leads the architectural design of the new government quarter in Oslo.

Career[edit]

After working at Thorenfeldt Architects and Telje, Torp & Aasen Architects, Stokke founded the architecture firm Narud Stokke Wiig AS in 1979, together with architects Jørn Narud and Ole Wiig. In 1991, Narud Stokke Wiig Architects and Planners was established with Stokke as the leader. In 2012, the name was changed to Nordic Office of Architecture AS. Under Stokke's leadership, the firm has evolved into a large architecture environment in the Nordic region with activities in Oslo, Copenhagen, and Reykjavik. The firm's projects span across health buildings, housing, commercial buildings, infrastructure, and urban planning.

Gudmund Stokke was president of Association of Norwegian Architects (Norske arkitekters landsforbund) from 2003 to 2006.

Architectural style[edit]

Many of Stokke's projects are developed in close interdisciplinary collaboration with strong engineering and architecture teams. He seeks simplicity and timelessness in both function and architectural expression in all of his projects. The buildings are characterized by a strong influence of Nordic design and nature, and are open, bright, and friendly. In airport terminals, emphasis is placed on expressing local characteristics and providing positive experiences for travelers and those who work there.
