Guerrilla History is a left-wing history podcast in the Revolutionary Left Radio family of podcasts.[1] The podcast debuted in November 2020 and is released three to four times per month, and is hosted by Henry Hakamaki, Professor Adnan Husain, and Breht O'Shea.[2]
It is one show of the Revolutionary Left Radio family of podcasts, alongside The Red Menace and the flagship program Revolutionary Left Radio, each of which is hosted or co-hosted by Breht O'Shea.[3] The show acts as a reconnaissance report of global proletarian history and aims to use the lessons of history to analyze the present.[4]
History
The podcast debuted in November 2020 as a sister show to the popular podcasts hosted by O'Shea, Revolutionary Left Radio and The Red Menace. The show was spawned from conversations that had taken place between Husain and Hakamaki on the progressive comedy and news podcast The [[David Feldman (comedian)|David Feldman Show].[5] O'Shea was then brought into the mix by Hakamaki, who had previously been a guest on Revolutionary Left Radio.[6]
In an episode of the show commemorating the 5 year anniversary of Revolutionary Left Radio being on the air, O'Shea stated that while Revolutionary Left Radio had always discussed historical topics on the show, and would continue to do so, the creation of Guerrilla History as a history-specific show has allowed him to branch more widely on other topics on Revolutionary Left Radio. In this same episode, each of the hosts stated that the aim of the show was to serve as political education to arm activists with the lessons of history in order to best effect change in their movements.[7]
Content
The podcast has several different formats of varying lengths, depending on the episode types. Main episodes range from 1-3 hours in length and feature an in-depth interview with one or more guests, bookended by an introduction and wrap-up conducted amongst the hosts. Intelligence Briefings are shorter (30-75 minutes), more informal episodes that sometimes feature guests but often are conducted with only the hosts present, and are released first on the show's patreon account, before roughly half are unlocked and released to the public.[8] Dispatches focus on current events with an eye towards historical parallels, and occasionally feature guests with specialties in the topics at hand. "From the Archives" episodes are episodes that had been released as Patreon-exclusive episodes more than one year previously that have been unlocked for the general public.[9] The show presents historical events, political movements, and activism through a anti-colonial, anti-imperialist, and anti-capitalist lens. While each of the hosts is fairly open about his individual ideology, the show brings on guests from varying left-wing tendencies.
