Guido Verhoef is a Dutch balloon artist and art director known for large-scale collaborative balloon installations.[1] Since the early 1990s, he has worked internationally in balloon art, producing sculptures, exhibitions and performances.[2] Among his large collaborative projects are Balloon World Adventure in Brussels and Luftballonwelten in Munich.[1][3]

Verhoef was a professional judge on the Dutch television competition Blow Up and later served as the professional judge on the German adaptation of the programme.[4]

Early life and education

Verhoef studied at the European School for Performing Arts in the Netherlands.[5] After completing his education he combined performing arts with sculpture and balloon design, gradually specializing in large-scale artistic installations and public events.

Career

Since the early 1990s Verhoef has worked as a professional balloon artist, designer and creative director.[5] He founded The Art of Balloons, an international company specializing in balloon installations, entertainment and creative productions.[6] His work ranges from small sculptural pieces to installations containing hundreds of thousands of balloons.[7] In interviews, Verhoef has described balloon sculpture as a form of pop art and has emphasized its accessibility as an artistic medium, highlighting its collaborative nature and ability to engage broad audiences.[8]

Several of Verhoef’s projects have combined balloon art with community work or other artistic disciplines. In 2007, he created Monsterness in Scotland as part of a collaborative project involving homeless teenagers.[9] He later collaborated with Austrian body painter Bella Volen on Paintloon, a project combining body painting, balloon sculpture and costume design.[10] In 2012, he worked with Dutch artist Hester Oerlemans on balloon sculptures for her exhibition LINK-O-LOON, including interpretations of classic chair designs.[11]

In 2016, Verhoef conceived and project-managed Balloon Village at the World Balloon Art Festival in Xiamen, China. The installation was created by an international team and received a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest balloon village.[12][13][14] That year, he also led an international team of balloon artists in creating the Balloon Rhino Project in Pretoria, South Africa, which was intended to raise awareness of rhinoceros poaching.[15] He also designed Dove of Freedom, a large-scale balloon installation presented at a sculpture festival in Ma’alot, Israel.[16]

In 2020, Verhoef worked on a balloon sculpture of a dinosaur in Istanbul, constructed from approximately 150,000 balloons. The project was recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest balloon sculpture of a dinosaur.[7][17][18] The following year, he created The Cubes for the BuitenGewoon theatre festival in Doetinchem. The installation consisted of six interconnected cubes and used approximately 100,000 balloons.[6][19]

In 2024, Verhoef was involved in the development of Lufiland, a balloon-art exhibition in Budapest. The exhibition occupied approximately 4,000 square metres and used around 500,000 balloons.[8][20] He subsequently developed and served as art director of Luftballonwelten, an exhibition that opened in Munich in 2026. Constructed from approximately 500,000 balloons, it was assembled by an international team of balloon artists.[1][2]

Television

Between 2007 and 2016, Verhoef appeared in Dutch children's television, portraying Kurk in Elly en de Wiebelwagen and Boswachter Otto in Koek & Ei.[21]

In 2022, Verhoef served as the professional balloon expert and judge on the Dutch television competition Blow Up, produced by Endemol Shine Nederland for RTL 4.[22] Following the programme's success, the format was adapted internationally, and Verhoef returned as the professional judge for the German version.[23]

Education

Verhoef has been an international balloon instructor for more than three decades. He has taught workshops and masterclasses at international conventions and training events throughout Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Africa and Australia.[24] He has also produced instructional DVDs and educational video courses on balloon sculpture and design.[25]

Awards and recognition

Verhoef has received several international awards and honours for his contributions to balloon art and the international balloon industry. These include:

  • European Balloon Entertainer of the Year (2001).[26]
  • Don Cheeseman Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award (2009), presented in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States.[27]
  • David Grist Memorial Award (2014, 2017).[28]

Verhoef has also contributed to several projects recognised by Guinness World Records and other official world record organisations, including:

  • World's Largest Balloon Tunnel, Brussels, Belgium (2005).[29][30]
  • Largest Balloon Village (Guinness World Record), Xiamen, China (2016).[13][14]
  • Largest Balloon Zoo (Guinness World Record), Xiamen, China (2017).[31]
  • Largest Under-the-Sea Balloon Animal (certified by the Rekord-Institut für Deutschland), Duisburg, Germany (2019).[32][33]
  • Largest Balloon Dinosaur (Guinness World Record project), Istanbul, Turkey (2020).[17][18]
  • Largest Octopus made of balloons (certified by the Rekord-Institut für Deutschland), Hockenheim, Germany (2024).[34][35]
