Gulabuddin Sukhanwar (Dari: گلاب‌الدین سخنور‎; born 1982) is an author, public speaker and refugee affairs activist in Norway. He is the founder of Literature for Inclusion[1] at the House of Literature Trondheim.[2] He is a member of the academic committee for literature at the Arts Council Norway, which functions as an advisory body to the Government and public sector on cultural affairs and is the main department for implementing Norwegian cultural policy.[3] Gulabuddin has been constantly working for the immigration integration and the immigrants’ rights in Europe including Norway.[4][5][6]

Early life

Gulabuddin grew up in Kalu, a small village in Shibar district, Bamyan Province, Afghanistan. The earliest memories of his homeland are of civil war. He was injured in a shooting when he was just five years old, during an attempt on the life of his father, Qurban Ali, an Ismaili community elder, who was imprisoned several times by Afghanistan Jihadi Groups during the Afghan civil war. Gulabuddin continues his father's legacy and writes in support of minority rights in Afghanistan.[7][8]

A Journey with Words

In a speech he delivered in October 2018 through the TEDx platform, he talks about the power of words to connect. He told the story of how, as a scholar, poet and writer, he had to flee his country Afghanistan and cross the borders to reach Norway. In his speech, he emphasized that it is not only the human body that travels, but also ideas, culture, language, identity, and religion. In his talk, he also said that all his family members, loved ones, and belongings are left behind in Afghanistan; he has only brought his words, experience, and culture with him. Gulabuddin aimed to assist other refugees with his program called Literature for Inclusion, which is developed to promote acceptance and understanding between cultures and communities. [9][10]

Literature for Inclusion

Literature for inclusion is an initiative by Gulabuddin Sukhanwar at Litteraturhuset i Trondheim, the House of Literature in Trondheim, started in 2018.[11] Literature for inclusion annually hosts over 60 different events[12] including Migration literature festival, Arabic literature and culture week, Spanish literature and culture week, Eritrean literature and culture week, workshops, creative writing courses, and public debates, and is known as one of the most vibrant initiatives in Trondheim. The Literature for inclusion is featured in many local and international academic journals, including scientific and university presses. For example, the Cartographic Storytelling, Migration, and Reception Environments by University of Minnesota Press, “Beyond the Word:” Immersion, Art, and Theory in Environmental and Digital Humanities Prototyping published by Digital Humanities Quarterly, and several other scientific and scholarly publications about Literature for Inclusion are published, forthcoming, or under review at the Modern Language Association, Oxford University, Faculty of Law, SUNY University Press.[13][14] The project aims to connect immigrants and other citizens in Trondheim and Trøndelag through literature, art and music.[15] [16][17][18]

Poetry Without Borders

Poetry without Borders is a poetry reading and conversation devoted to different languages hosted by Gulabuddin Sukhanwar. This is to desegregate access to culture in our city, to create spaces where poets of all languages, genders, classes, and ethnicities can share and do poetry, and talk about why poetry and literature might matter in our global moment of perpetual crises.[19] [20]

Books

Sukhanwar published his first poetry book in 2011. He is also one of the authors of Høre Hjemme (In poetry we belong), Trondheim’s first multilingual anthology, published by Beijing Trondheim, in 2017.[21] As a writer, Sukhanwar frequently publishes literary criticism and book reviews. [22] [23][24][25][26][27]

Exhibition

Sukhanwar's words and poetry have been presented and exhibited in different events including in an exhibition at Galleri Gro in Pietarsaari -Jakobstad, Finland in 2016.[28] He writes poetry in English, Farsi, and Norwegian. Sukhanwar's poetry highlights justice, human rights, migration, and diversity. A Norwegian singer, Kristine Sundberg, has set music to his lyrics and presented the songs in a concert named «The Wandering Traveller» during Afghanistan Week 2016 in Norway. [29][30]

Faces of Power

Sukhanwar was one of six writers and artists to propose artistic activities to promote education relating to human rights as part of the Falstad Centre project “Faces of Power – Art in the Commander’s Residence,”.[31]

Gulabuddin is frequently invited to high schools, universities, and cultural institutions to present his work and ideas, which focus on migration, diversity, literature, and cultural heritage.[32][33] [34]
