Gun Bros is a freemium Twin-Stick shooter published by Glu Mobile LLC on October 17, 2010, on iOS, then later on Android respectively. Influenced by the early Social Media uprising, the game utilized Facebook on most platforms and also Game Center on iOS for most of its Online features (later on it expanded to Open Feint on Android). It was one of Glu Mobile's biggest hits in their early 2010s freemium participation in the growing Mobile Market that was the App Store and Android Market (later Play Store).

Gameplay

File:Gun Bros Gameplay.png The game is a top-down twin-stick shooter, it uses the touchscreen's left joystick for 360 degree movement, and the right joystick for 360 degree shooting. The game plays with up to 2 players (in Single-Player your teammate is an AI) that go through the game's Campaign. The levels are divided into Planets and within that are 10 Revolutions with 50 Waves (levels) each that grow in difficulty with every Revolution. The simple yet fun base concept is complimented by various RPG elements, such as defeating enemies to gain money for stat changing equipment and XP for extra Health all the way to progressing through the game's incredibly lengthy and difficult New Game +-like campaign. Combine that with popular Social elements of the early 2010s mobile market, namely Passive Multiplayer, the game has a Brotherhood system that acts as a friend portal where you can use your friend's character to play as your AI teammate, gain passive stats for adding friends in-game and complete Daily Objectives known as Bro-Ops by yourself, or gaining more rewards by having friends complete them as well.

Story

The game is set in a futuristic Sci-Fi universe after the 22nd century where Earth is now New Earth and inter-galactic civilization is thriving. The main protagonists known as the Bros are one of the two available characters codenamed Percy and Francis, they are part of the F.R.A.G.G.E.D (Freakishly Rugged Advanced Genetics Galactic Enforcement Division) organisation that fights against the main antagonist organisation known simply as T.O.O.L. (Tyrannical Oppressors Of Life) that, based on their in-game description, are "hell bent on enslaving the galaxy". According to the sequel, Gun Bros 2, the first game is set in the XPlodium Interdiction Wars as the main currency in the game is known as a purple, radioactive ore called XPlodium that goes through refining and is used to make the world turn, as its use ranges from Dinosaur food to buying Ginormous Guns and equipment.

Development

iOS : not much is known about the first game's development team, according to Chris Handloser it was made by a total of 5 people in about the span of half a year[citation needed], some known names are Chris Handloser, the former Senior Art Lead of Glu Mobile at the time, Corey Annis the lead Coder/Programmer and Rick Mendez who apparently provided lore and most in-game descriptions for Guns, Armor, Power-Ups, Help etc. Though it is confirmed they worked on the sequel with an expanded team and bigger budget where a proper Credits is actually present.

Android : according to Chris Handloser it was made by an in-house team to whom the iOS team gave access of the iOS version.

Windows Phone : unknown but outsourced rookie developer team, confirmed by Chris Handloser.

Facebook and Hi5 : HitPoint Studios[1]

Trivia

The game made it into the Guinness World Records by having the most expensive in-game micro-transaction Gun at the time, known as the Kraken, it cost up to 500USD.[2]
