Gunnar Klack (born 1979 in Hamburg) is a German architect, architecture historian and author. He is known for his activism in protecting threatened brutalist architecture.

Life and Work[edit]

Gunnar Klack graduated with Diplom from Berlin University of the Arts, after studying Architecture from 1999 to 2005. He went on to write a doctoral dissertation about the work of the architects Hermann Fehling and Daniel Gogel, known for their Studentendorf Schlachtensee in Berlin. Klack received a PhD (Doktoringenieur) from Technical University of Berlin (TU) in 2013. After a trainee position at Berlinische Galerie (2013–2015) and teaching assignments and academic work at the Chair for Historic Preservation at the Institute for Urban and Regional Planning at TU Berlin (2015–2017), he became assistant curator at the Historical Technical Museum, Peenemünde (2018–2019). Currently he is a freelance assistant for the Berlin State Office for Cultural Heritage Management.[1]

Parallel to his work in academia and cultural heritage, Klack is working as a journalist. From 2007 until 2012 he was a regular contributor for the magazine Spex. He has written articles for numerous online and print outlets including Die Welt and Die Zeit.[2]

Activism[edit]

In 2020, Gunnar Klack and the art historian Felix Torkar petitioned to save a brutalist building in Berlin. The building in question, which was at risk, is the Research Institutes for Experimental Medicine.[3] Klack and Torkar received media attention throughout 2020 and 2021.[4][5] Their public campaign was the subject of numerous press articles and television reports, nationally and internationally.[6][7][8]

In his writing about the cultural and historic value of Nuclear Power, Klack argues for recognizing nuclear Power stations as Germany's industrial heritage.[9][10][11]
