Gymshark is a fitness clothing and accessories brand that sells to 180 countries.[1].
History[edit]
Gymshark was set up in 2012 by Ben Francis, at the time a 19-year old Aston University student[2]. When Gymshark’s revenue reached £250,000[3] Francis quit his job as a pizza delivery driver and his course at Aston University to focus on Gymshark.
Valued at between £300M and £400M[4], the company was named as the UK’s fastest growing company in 2016[5] in The Sunday Times Fast Track 100.
In 2018/19 turnover was around £200M and head count expanded to over 400 employees in 2019[6].
Locations[edit]
Gymshark’s UK head office is based at Blythe Valley Park in Shirley, West Midlands. A 42,408 sq ft office building with room for 600 people[7].
Gymshark also has an 8,000 sq ft office in Hong Kong[8] and in 2019 the company set up its North American office in downtown Denver[9].
Products[edit]
Gymshark sells fitness apparel for men and women[10] including workout vests, hoodies, t-shirts and leggings[11].
Product pricing is considered mid-range with the price of leggings ranging from £20 to £50[12].
Marketing[edit]
Gymshark is well-known for its focus on social media and influencer marketing[13]. The company’s social media accounts have a combined social media following of 65M followers[14]. Gymshark also partners with athletes who promote Gymshark products on social media[15].
The company only sells via its international websites, but occasionally puts on events and opens pop-up shops[16]. Gymshark’s Canadian pop-up attracted 8,000 people but involved queuing for upwards of four hours[17].
Criticism[edit]
Black Friday 2017 saw Gymshark’s website crash for eight hours, causing customers to take to Twitter to complain to the company. The site crash cost Gymshark an estimated $143,000 in lost sales. Founder Ben Francis sent over 2,500 handwritten apologies to customers affected by the website crash[18]
