History

Foundation and development of HDI

The ‘Haftpflichtverband der deutschen Eisen- und Stahlindustrie’ (‘Liability Association of the German Iron and Steel Industry’) was founded in 1903. The industrial sector represents the historical centrepiece of the HDI Group and the Talanx Group. In 1924, the Eisen- und Stahl Aktiengesellschaft, founded in co-operation with the Gerling Group in 1923, took over reinsurance for HDI. In 1952, the association opened to companies from all sectors to be able to address larger customer groups. In 1970, HDI merged with the Feuerschadenverband rheinisch-westfälischer Zechen and was renamed ‘Haftpflichtverband der deutschen Industrie V.a.G.’. In 1990, the Group's risk-exposed business segments led to a reorganisation towards a more balanced distribution of risk. To this end, cover was introduced via industrial, private customer and reinsurance business. In 2003, the Talanx Group emerged from the HDI Group. In 2005, the Gerling Group was integrated into the Group until 2012, when the HDI and HDI-Gerling brands were combined under the HDI brand.

Foundation of HDI Global and expansion

In 2016, ‘HDI-Gerling Industrie Versicherung AG’ was rebranded as ‘HDI Global SE’ Since then, this company has managed the Corporate & Specialty division within the Talanx Group. This covers property insurance, general liability, marine, engineering, aviation and transport insurance, motor vehicle liability insurance and speciality insurance. To date, the company has opened branches in more than 35 countries on six continents.

Since 2021, HDI Global Specialty SE, founded in 2018, has been a wholly owned subsidiary of HDI Global. HDI Global is active in the specialty sector in more than 20 different business areas, including aviation, crisis management, management insurance and travel insurance.

Company structure

HDI Global SE, together with its subsidiaries, forms the Corporate & Specialty division of Talanx AG. Talanx AG acts as a management and financial holding company within the Group, but is not itself active in the insurance business. Talanx AG is controlled by the mutual insurance association ‘HDI V. a. G.’ as the largest majority shareholder. Talanx AG has been listed on the stock exchange since 2 October 2012. The operational insurance business is conducted by the Group companies of the Talanx Group, such as HDI Global SE.
