HEALing Communities Study
The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) is a multisite, cluster-randomized, waitlist-controlled trial testing the impact of the Communities that HEAL (CTH) intervention to reduce opioid-related overdose deaths and other associated outcomes.[1] The goal of the study is to reduce opioid-related overdose deaths by 40% over three years in 67 highly affected communities in Kentucky, Ohio, Massachusetts, and New York. The CTH intervention will implement a set of evidence-based practices, including naloxone distribution, medication for opioid use disorder, and safer prescribing practices, in an array of community settings. Jointly sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the HCS is the largest implementation science study ever conducted in the field of substance use. The scientific approach of the HCS is described in a special issue of the journal, Drug and Alcohol Dependence.[2] The special issue includes the study protocol and detailed descriptions of the approaches used for key components of the study, including community engagement, evidence-based practices, communication campaigns, implementation science, community dashboards, data collection, and health economics.
The HCS consists of four study sites (the University of Kentucky; the Ohio State University; Boston Medical Center; Columbia University) and a data coordinating center (RTI International). The study will help establish best practices for implementing strategies to address the U.S. national opioid crisis.
