HMP Aldington is a former prison near Ashford, Kent, England. The prison was operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service. The former prison site was sold and demolished, being replaced with a housing development.
History
The prison was opened on the site of an Army camp in 1947, in response to an increase in prisoner numbers after the Second World War. In 1961 it became a senior Detention Centre, and in 1986 it was designated a Category C adult male prison.[1]
In July 1999 it was announced by Home Secretary Jack Straw that the prison would be closed and handed to the Immigration Service for use as an immigration detention centre.[2]
