HPI Racing is a radio control model manufacturer owned by a Scandinavian-based Vestergaard Group. HPI Racing was founded in 1986 and is known among enthusiasts for the electric and nitro radio-controlled car models: Baja and Savage.

History[edit]

In 1986 Tatsuro Watanabe and a partner founded Hobby Products International in Southern California. The initial product range included car accessories like graphite parts for existing race cars, wheels for off-road and on-road vehicles, and motors. The company followed a transition from a focus on accessories to having its complete products. Super F1 was the first car kit designed by HPI. A line of electric R/C motors called the Uno series was also among the first products. Using the revenue from Uno, HPI opened a small office in Japan.[1] [2]

In the next thirty years, the HPI product line expanded from the initial electric-powered car kits into fuel-powered RC: Nitro RS4 and Micro RS4. Baja (1/5 scale) and Savage (1/8 scale), developed by HPI, were one of the biggest (in model scale) mass production radio-controlled car models in the world.[3]
