HUMUH: Jeweled Path of Living Wisdom

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

HÜMÜH’s Padma Valley stupa

HÜMÜH: Jeweled Path of Living Wisdom is an unbiased form of Buddhism (Rime) founded by Maticintin in 1992, and recognized as a Buddhist religion by the United States and Canadian governments. There are HÜMÜH members in 22 countries with meditation and study groups in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Etymology[edit]

HÜMÜH and HÜM are intoned the same (pronounced HÜM with a single long ū sound). The organization’s name, HÜMÜH, views the second syllable as a silent reflection of the first syllable.

HUM is a Sanskrit seed syllable, and is said to be recognized by ancient Buddhism to mean understanding all aspects of truth and can unlock the true nature of reality.[1] The Sanskrit symbol for HUM can be found etched into rocks and ancient temples throughout the world. [2] [3] In HÜMÜH, the seed syllable is chanted to clear and smooth life’s energies, and there is evidence this practice is used in other parts of the world. [4]

HÜMÜH is called an Ati-Buddhist Sect. Ati (also called Atiyoga) means the achievement of “Great Perfection” through the realization of primordial wisdom.[5] “Such knowledge, described as pure or untainted logic, was taught by Garab Dorje in 50 CE, Sakyamuni, 350 BC, and Padmasambhava, the Wisdom Master or Buddha, who brought Buddhism to Tibet from India some 1200 years ago. Once realized, such perfect Buddhism has the power to spontaneously bring about enlightenment.” [6]

History[edit]

HÜMÜH’s Forest Temple of Enlightenment

From its origin in Cottonwood, AZ, USA, in 1992, HÜMÜH relocated the base of the organization to Orcas Island, WA, in 1995. During the years at Orcas Island, 3-day teaching intensives, called empowerments, were held as often as 3 times per year in different locations in the U. S. and Canada where students received teachings and special initiations and took vows.[7]

In 2000, HÜMÜH’S Skycliffe Monastery and Retreat Centre opened in Westbridge, British Columbia, and was acknowledged by the Canadian government as a Buddhist religion. There, a 50’ tall Golden Stupa, Mandala Garden, Forest Temple of Enlightenment were established on 220 acres bordering the Kettle River, as well as, housing for staff and retreatants. [8] In the following years, daily teachings and meditations, as well as, teaching empowerments lasting one to four weeks, and long term retreats [9] were offered at the monastery throughout the year.

In 2008, a Meditation and Dharma Center was opened in Oroville, WA, offering meditation instruction [10] and public Satsangs to study the teachings. In 2012, HÜMÜH purchased 640 acres in the Music Mountains outside of Kingman, Arizona, named Desert Wings Canyon, with designs for a U. S. monastery. In 2015, HÜMÜH opened a Meditation and Dharma Center in Kingman, AZ, USA, where Sunday teachings and meditation instruction are offered throughout the week [11] .

Teachings and Study Programs[edit]

Over the many centuries of its existence, Buddhism has taken on a great diversity of cultural manifestations throughout the world that reflect both the universal and the unique spiritual needs of the historical time periods and societies that have embraced it as a Spiritual Path. This has resulted in a variety of forms and lineages of the Buddhist teachings and spiritual practices. Such rich multiplicity finds historical embodiment in the emergence of a variety of doctrinal schools that vary in their emphases, modes of spiritual and liturgical practice, and manner of dress and service, as well as, through varying options for both monastic and lay membership, and in the criteria for spiritual progression towards enlightenment. [12] HÜMÜH describes its teachings as Rime, [13] or unbias, only drawing from Buddhist doctrine and tradition on its own merits.

Maticintin describes HÜMÜH teachings as primordial wisdom, spiritual teachings existing from the beginning of time from which emerged historical schools of Buddhism, Taoism, and other traditions.[14] Maticintin’s book Secrets of the Golden Spiral, Handbook for Enlightenment provides a collection of the HÜMÜH primordial teachings. [15]

The purpose of HÜMÜH teachings is to guide the student towards spiritual awakening, or enlightenment. HÜMÜH’s study program is organized by initiation levels, and is made available through live classes, monthly discourses called Journeys, and specific discourses for each initiation level and spiritual role, as well as, online audio teachings for the public.[16]

All classes are taught by Maticintin or senior HÜMÜH monks at one of the HÜMÜH locations, and range from a single teaching to a 3-week program. HÜMÜH monks teach meditation and facilitate study groups. HÜMÜH often uses modern terminology, rather than traditional Buddhist or Taoist terms, so that understanding is accessible to the comprehension of current Western culture.

HÜMÜH dharma practices draw from Buddhist and Taoist traditions and include quieting the mind through Third Eye Vision or awareness of being aware, and daily prayers, chants, and meditation. The daily prayers and chants [17] include chanting the HÜM and The Wish-fulfilling Gem Mantra, a 66-stanza Sanskrit terma that calls upon the aspects of the Buddha Nature for help, upliftment, and the transmutation of negative energy. HÜMÜH meditation [18] [19] is taught as a living meditation, which includes the traditional sitting meditation, but extends to carrying the meditative state into service while performing the ordinary actions of daily living and interactions. All of these dharma practices prepare the student to live life from a natural state, a place of unlimited consciousness that is uncontrived and impartial, thus enabling one to live wholeheartedly and spontaneously in the present moment.

Transcendental Awareness Institute[edit]

The Transcendental Awareness Institute (T.A.I.) is a vehicle for disseminating HÜMÜH’s Teachings to the public, spiritual explorers, and initiates (students) of Maticintin. The Initiate Home-Study Program[20] allows for increasing levels of participation and learning at the initiate’s choice. For students interested in deepening their spiritual studies, elective courses are offered, as well as, a study of 100 Secret Formulas brought forth by Sakyamuni Buddha.[21] Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate degrees in Logic and Buddhism are recognized by the Washington State Department of Education, and are offered for all initiates. [22]

Vows[edit]

Initiates are eligible to request to take the Bodhisattva Vow and/or the Monk Vow at particular levels of initiation.
