HWKN is an architecture innovation firm based in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Led by founding principal Matthias Hollwich, the firm designs cultural and private developments globally.

The firm is recognized for their work with cities, developers, and clients that maximize real estate impact and value. Among these are 25 Kent, Williamsburg's first ground-up office development in over 50 years,[1] and the University of Pennsylvania's Pennovation Center, an old industrial warehouse that was transformed into the center of the university's innovation campus.[2]

HWKN is also known for designing new building typologies that anticipate future ways of living and working, such as co-living,[3] intergenerational living,[4] and flexible workspaces.[5]

History[edit]

HWKN, formerly Hollwich Kushner Architects, was founded in 2007 by Matthias Hollwich and Marc Kushner.

In 2009, Hollwich and Kushner founded Architizer, an online platform for architects to promote their work in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.[6]

In 2012, the firm was awarded the MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program (YAP) for their installation, Wendy.[7]

In 2016, they were named one of Bloomberg's Top 100 Business Innovators for their work creating buildings that anticipate future needs and challenges.[8]

In 2017, the firm was named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies for their advancement and innovative application of adaptive reuse.[9] Subsequently, the firm completed a number of commissions including the University of Pennsylvania's Pennovation Center (2016), residential high-rise Journal Squared (2017), and the speculative office building 25 Kent (2019).

In 2019, Marc Kushner departed the firm to start his own practice, and the firm name was changed to HWKN.[10]

During the summer of the COVID-19 pandemic, the firm converted an abandoned industrial site into a socially-distanced urban beach in Paterson, New Jersey.[11]

Currently, the firm is developing a new residential brand called FLX LIVE that encourages intergenerational living, affordability, and developer flexibility.
