Habinenu

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Habinenu (Hebrew: הביננו‏‎) is the blessing made of 13 central blessings of the Amidah.[1]

Etymology[edit]

"Habinenu" (Hebrew: הביננו‏‎) means literally "Give us" is Judeo-Aramaic word used in Tanakh and Talmud.

Mishnah[edit]

Mishnah Berakhoth 4 discusses opportunity to say a Jew shortened Amidah but doesn't give any precise text. "Rabban Gamaliel says: every day a [Jew] is praying with eighteen [blessings]. Rabbi Joshua says: shortened eighteen [blessings]. Rabbi Aqiba says: if he knows his prayer fluently then he prays eighteen [blessings], but if he doesn't know then shortened eighteen [blessings]".[2]

Talmud[edit]

Mishnah mentions that all 18 blessings of Amidah may be shortened. But Babylonian Talmud[3] Berakhoth 29a mentions that just only a group of the middle 16 blessings of Amidah are shortened but initial 3 blessings and last 3 blessings are full. Babylonian Talmud mentions precise text of that shortened blessing and gives the title "Habinenu".[4]

Rabbi Yoshua says: shortened eighteen [blessings]. What is the shortened eighteen [blessings]? Rab said: shortened of each and every of [eighteen blessings]. However Shmuel said:
Give us knowledge, the Lord, our God, to know Your ways,[5]
and circumcise our heart so that we may fear You,[6]
and forgive us so that we may be redeemed,[7]
and distance us from our deseases,[8]
and satisfy us with the pastures of Your land,[9]
and gather our scattered Jews from the four [corners of the earth],[10]
and those who go astray shall be judged according to Your will,[11]
and raise Your hands over the wicked,[12]
and may the righteous rejoice in the rebuilding of Your city, and the restoration of Your Sanctuary, and in the flourishing of Your servant David, and in establishing a torching light for Your King, son of Jesse.[13]
Even before we call, but You already answer.[14] Blessed are You, the Lord, Who listens the prayer.[15][16]
