HackDavis is an annual collegiate hackathon hosted at the University of California, Davis. The student-run event brings together students from across California to collaborate and create technical projects with a focus on social good.[1]
HackDavis is unique in that it partners with nonprofit organizations in Davis, California and the Sacramento metropolitan area to create technical solutions for issues they face. Previous nonprofit partners include Habitat for Humanity, Benetech, and Teach for America.
History
HackDavis was co-founded in 2016 by UC Davis students Rohit Tigga, Christina Zhu, Sridatt Bhamidipati, and Vignesh Palaniappan. The inaugural event was held in May 2016, co-hosted with UC Davis' Society of Women Engineers, and received support from sponsors such as Google, IBM, and Amazon, allowing HackDavis to donate $6,000 in charity. The event achieved a significant milestone in maintaining a 50/50 gender ratio, attracting participants from various majors and backgrounds.[2]
The 2017 edition of HackDavis marked a substantial expansion from the previous year, attracting more than 600 students. The event’s focus was on three main tracks: health and wellness, environment, and education. A mentoring system was introduced, with volunteers from Google, Amazon, and UC Davis ensuring that participants had the support they needed to overcome challenges.[3]
In 2018, HackDavis moved to its current venue at the University Credit Union Center (formerly the ARC Pavilion) to overcome attendee capacity constraints. The event saw 700 participants submitting over 100 technical projects.[4]
HackDavis 2021 was hosted virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[5]

Event Format
The hackathon follows a 24-hour format where participants form teams and work collaboratively on projects. These projects span a wide range of topics, including software development, hardware hacking, and innovative applications of technology. Throughout the event, participants have the opportunity to attend workshops, network with industry professionals, and showcase their creations to judges.
