Hackatao
Hackatao is a duo composed of two anonymous Italian digital artists among the pioneers of crypto art..[1][2][3][4] They are referred to as "OG" artists.[5] They are known for their recognisable pop style, and for their vibrant-colored graphic-style drawing.[6][7] The duo often exhibits their works with collaboration with world-renowned auction houses such as Christie's[8][9][10] and Sotheby’s and creates works with other artists and crypto projects such as CryptoPunks[11], CryptoKitties[12], and José Delbo[3]. The latter has resulted in a nearly $2 million sale for their Heroines art pieces.[3] Their works were displayed at the Francisco Carolinum Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Digital Art[6][13], and are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Crypto Art[14]
Early Career
The duo first met and started to create art together back in 2007.[15] Their name derives from "Hack" for the pleasure of discovering what's hidden under the skin; and "Tao" for Yin and Yang.[16] Curator Igor Zanti had invited Hackatao to participate in the "New Art New Pop" exhibition at Brolo Centro d’Arte in Mogliano Veneto.[17][18][19]
In their very first exhibition, at the Wannabee gallery in Milan, Hackatao presented, for the first time, a creature-like sculpture. The duo came up with the neologism, "podmork '', giving a name to the sculpture and to numerous similar sculptures to come. The newly coined word described a totemic creature, which has now become one of their signature pieces.
Their next exhibition was Sex Toy. The exhibition Little Aliens Discover Planet Sex would follow in November 2008, in Bologna.[20][21]
Crypto Art
The Italian duo Hackatao are amongst the pioneers of the crypto art scene, having entered early on in 2018, their artworks and practice were considered young in their nature, making references to the ambiguities of today's society. When Hackatao’s artworks are minted and tokenized, digital certificates and contracts are permanently stored in the Blockchain, created by using unique cryptographic coding.
One of Hackatao’s highest-selling pieces sold for the equivalent of $247,060 and it is "Kim Jong Un - 'Dead and Alive' Edition", an animated representation of North Korea's political leader, transforming between human and skeleton.[22] A description of the work states that "Like Schrödinger's cat, until we open the dictatorship box he's both alive and dead", as the artists play with state and nature of being.
In 2018 Hackatao opened the FIGHT FEAR exhibition at Circolo degli Esteri in Rome, where they presented paintings speaking of apocalyptic visions.[23]
FIGHT FEAR was also presented at Palazzo Frisacco in Tolmezzo[24], where an entire floor of the museum was dedicated to crypto artists of that time, now known as “OGs" such as Coldie, CryptoPunks, Robbie Barrat and Xcopy, curated by Jason Bailey.
In 2020 Hackatao had a solo exhibition entitled "The Truth is" at the Zanini Arte gallery in the province of Mantua.[25] Also in 2020, the highest-selling piece by Hackatao, Imago 2k2 a.C, was sold[26]. It is a piece that combines both the physical and digital mediums. In the same year, Hackatao announced the development of a game called ‘Hack the Tao’, an art game experience designed by them for The Sandbox game.[27][28]
Hackatao was invited in 2021 by Christie’s, to create a digital companion piece to the rare, historical drawing Head of a Bear by Leonardo da Vinci. The result, Hack of a Bear, was subsequently released by Hackatao as an NFT.[8][7] The work was given an augmented reality feature and was exhibited at the Museum of Crypto Art.[29]
In the same year, Hackatao went on to collaborate with American rock band Blondie on Hack the Borders[30], launching a series of NFT artworks and paying homage to leading figure pop artist Andy Warhol. The digital pieces celebrated the meeting of cryptoart and punk rock music and culture, portraying the band’s lead vocalist Debbie Harry in a lively, pop manner, just as Andy Warhol had done in the 1980s[31]. The artworks went on sale on the digital art auction platform Nifty Gateway.
In late 2021 (ongoing), Hackatao collaborated with Sotheby’s, NFT Studios and AMD on the Queens+Kings NFT artistic project[32][33], the first-of-its-kind, exploring the PFP[34][35] scene. Queens+Kings are composed of single NFT traits that are interchangeable, randomly allocated and algorithmically generated.[36]
In 2022 Hackatao have their first-ever offline exhibition in South Korea at ARTE MUSEUM VALLEY aka ARTE MUSEUM GANGNEUNG. Hackatao collaborated with ARTE META to create [SPIRIT FOREST] INCANTO[37][38], a user-generative digital work, where the physical and the virtual as well as the artwork and the spectator interact.
