Hai Shan Records
Hai Shan Records (海山唱片) is a record company founded by Gui Lin Ting Ting (桂林琤琤, daughter of Lin Ri Gao) and Zheng Zhen Kun (鄭鎮坤) in the 1960s, which has been committed to discovering Chinese pop music talents for many years.[1][2][3][4]
History
Hai Shan Records Corporation Period (-1993)
Hai Shan Records was founded in 1962. [4] Initially, it was just a small factory built next to a vegetable garden near a Siheyuan in Tucheng Township, Taipei County, and was established under extremely difficult conditions.[1] In 1963, the Shaw Brothers Company, in order to promote its Huangmei Opera films, allowed Taiwanese record companies to enter movie theaters and copy the films for free distribution. For a time, various record companies were busy recording Shaw Brothers' Huangmei Opera films, and the public was eager to buy them. Hai Shan Records rose to prominence with this trend.[4]

For a time, various record companies were busy recording Shaw Brothers' Huangmei Opera films, and the public was eager to buy them. Hai Shan Records rose to prominence with this trend.[4]
In 1965, the person in charge of Hai Shan Records, Zheng Zhenkun (鄭鎮坤), went to Southeast Asia to participate in a trade fair and found that the local Chinese were extremely passionate about Chinese culture. Upon returning to Taiwan, he immediately began planning for a large-scale export of records. At the same time, he sent singers to perform charity shows in the region or had local clubs and nightclubs hire them to perform. Soon, Southeast Asia became the main market for Taiwanese records, with annual exports reaching up to 800,000 at its peak, and sales were no less than in Taiwan itself. On the other hand, Hai Shan Records actively recruited composers and lyricists, including composers such as Zuo Hongyuan (左宏元), Luo Mingdao (駱明道), Liu Jiachang (劉家昌), Lin Jiaqing (林家慶), Weng Qingxi (翁清溪), and Huang Min (黃敏), and lyricists such as Shen Zhi (慎芝), Zhuang Nu (莊奴), Sun Yi (孫儀), and Lin Huangkun (林煌坤), which made Hai Shan stand out among the numerous record companies.[4] In 1967, Hai Shan Records adapted the Taiwanese song "The Sorrowful Wine Glass"(悲戀的酒杯) composed by Yao Zanfu (姚讚福) and written by Chen Daru (陳達儒) into a Mandarin song called "Bitter Wine Filled Cup."(苦酒滿杯) The lyrics were rewritten by Shen Zhi (慎芝), and the song was sung by Xie Lei (謝雷). Upon its release, it became a sensation across Taiwan. According to Hai Shan's estimates, including pirated copies, the production of "Bitter Wine Filled Cup" (苦酒滿杯) probably exceeded 1 million copies. Subsequently, Hai Shan successively launched Yao Surong (姚蘇蓉)'s "Not Going Home Today (今天不回家)," Cai Mimi's "Mom Gave Me a Guitar"(媽媽送我一個吉他), You Ya (尤雅)'s "Past Can Only Be Recalled"(往事只能回味), Liu Jiachang (劉家昌)'s "Plum Blossoms"(梅花), Ouyang Feifei (歐陽菲菲)'s "Passionate Desert"(熱情的沙漠), Yang Xiaoping (楊小萍)'s "Missing You So Much"(對你懷念特別多), and Weng Qianyu (翁倩玉)'s "Prayer"(祈禱), all of which were successful.

In the early 1970s, Hai Shan Records collaborated with movies to produce many popular movie soundtracks, including Zhen Ni's "Vows" and "Sunny with Occasional Showers," Feng Feifei's "Maple Love" and "Half Mountain Rain and Half Mountain Sunny," and Fei Yuqing's "Song of the Republic of China," which became popular in Chinese-speaking regions. Many artists who originally belonged to other record companies switched to Hai Shan, such as Cui Taijing, Chen Lanli, Qing Shan, Mei Dai, Tang Lanhua, Bai Jiali, Ni Bin, Zhang Li-Min, and Zhen Xiuzhen.[4] Around 1975, with the rise of campus folk songs, New Style Records (新格唱片) held the Golden Melody Awards song contest. Subsequently, Hai Shan Records teamed up with Lin Boyi (林伯宜) of Longwu Music (龍塢樂府) and Yongqi Department Store (永琦百貨) to hold the first Folk Song Wind Singing Competition. The two competitions resulted in four "Folk Song Wind" compilation albums, which competed with the Golden Melody Awards. Qi Yu (齊豫) and Li Lifen (李麗芬) were the respective champions of the first and second editions. Judges and contestants such as Ye Jiaxiu (葉佳修), Zhuo Xiuqin (卓琇琴), Lin Shida (林詩達), Little Crow Choir (Chen Hongming (陳宏銘), Huang Liqi (黃力奇), Jiang Zhiqi (江志棋)), Traveler Trio (Tong Ange (童安格), Qiu Yue (邱岳), Yuan Zhongping (袁中平)), Zheng Yi (鄭怡), Cai Qin (蔡琴), Su Lai (蘇來), Li Bihua (李碧華), Wu Zhenhui (吳貞慧), Chen Xiunan (陳秀男), Huang Wenhui (黃文輝), Liu Lide (劉立德), and others made their debuts here. Later, combinations of singers and composers such as Pan Anbang (潘安邦) and Ye Jiaxiu (葉佳修), and Cai Qin (蔡琴) and Liang Hongzhi (梁弘志) created classic works like "Grandma's Penghu Bay"(外婆的澎湖灣) and "Just Like Your Tenderness."(恰似你的溫柔)[5]

Entering the 1980s, Hai Shan Records invested too much and could not recover its funds. In December 1983, Hai Shan Records sought help from a trust company due to financial difficulties. Eventually, a stock dispute occurred, leading to legal action, and Hai Shan gradually faded. Later, due to copyright disputes, Hai Shan Records could not release records normally, and internal staff left one after another, establishing their own businesses. Later, the founder of Dianjiang Records (點將唱片), Gui Mingyu (桂鳴玉), and the person in charge of Ruixing Records (瑞星唱片), Zhang Youyun (張又云), were both former Hai Shan Records staff. In 1993, Hai Shan Records was deregistered by the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China. In 1990, Hai Shan Records' singers participated in the first Golden Melody Awards.
On March 15, 2007, the Taipei District Court in Taiwan ruled that the copyrights of 53 lyrics, including "Unfaithful Person"(負心的人), "Bitter Wine Filled Cup" (苦酒滿杯) ,and "Ten Thousand Lights"(萬家燈火), written by Shen Zhi (慎芝), belonged to her daughter Guan Yunqian (關韻千). The lawsuit originated from Guan Yunqian's accusation that Lige Records (麗歌唱片) and Hai Shan Records registered Shen Zhi's copyrighted lyrics with the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of China, produced accompaniment tapes, and even forged some of Shen Zhi's lyrics transfer certificates, infringing on her inherited copyright property rights of the 123 lyrics written by Shen Zhi.[6]
