Haiwon Lee
Haiwon Lee (Korean: 이해원; Hanja: 李海元) is a South Korean chemist, science policy expert, President of ARN Korea (Asian Research Network Korea), Professor Emeritus of Hanyang University, and Distinguished Research Fellow of the Jeonbuk State Institute. Lee is known for his contributions to nanolithography, nanomaterials research, and science and technology policy initiatives in Korea and Asia.
Education
Lee received his B.S. in Chemistry from Sogang University in Seoul and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Houston.
Academic career
Lee served as a professor of chemistry at Hanyang University from 1993 to 2019. He later became Professor Emeritus. During his tenure, he held leadership positions including Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and director of the Institute of Nano Science and Technology. He served as Vice-President for Industry-Academia Affairs at Jeonju University from 2024 to 2025. He currently serves as Distinguished Research Fellow of the Jeonbuk State Institute, where he contributes to regional innovation, science diplomacy, and technology policy initiatives.
He has held visiting and research positions at institutions including the University of Texas at Austin, Pennsylvania State University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer Research, RIKEN, the University of Texas at Dallas, and the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology of China.
Research
Lee’s research focuses on photoresist, nanolithography, carbon nanotube-based materials, biosensors, and semiconductor processing technologies. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and holds over 65 patents.
He was featured in Electronic Times as a leading figure in Korea’s nanotechnology research.[1]

Lee, President of ARN Korea (non-profit organization) and Professor Emeritus, Hanyang University, has been involved in science and technology policy and regional innovation initiatives.
