The Haldimand County Fire Department was formed in 2001 with the amalgamation of the Haldimand Fire Department's six stations, the Dunnville Fire Department's five stations and two of the Nanticoke Fire Department's four stations. Subsequently, the Kohler fire station was closed and a new station in South Cayuga was opened.

Organization

The department consists of 280 volunteer firefighters, commanded by five chiefs. The members are divided into 11 districts, each consisting of one fire station and 2-4 pieces of fire apparatus. Each fire station is commanded by one District Chief, who commands four Captains and 10-25 firefighters.

Fire Station Replacement

In 2011 a study was undertaken by Pomox Inc. to determine inefficiencies within the department. This study suggested that stations 8 (North Dunnville), 10 (Byng) and 12 (Fisherville) be closed, as well as an additional station be built in the Nanticoke Industrial Area. The Haldimand County Council carried out the closing of the two Dunnville area stations, 8 and 10, while moving their apparatus to other stations. These closures faced stiff opposition by local residents.

As the majority of Haldimand County Fire Stations have been reaching the ends of their life cycles, many have had to be replaced in recent years. This includes the construction of a new station 7 in Lowbanks in 2008, station 5 between Canfield and Empire Corners in 2013 and stations 2, 4 and 11 in Hagersville, Cayuga and McKay's Corner respectively. Stations 1 (Caledonia), 6 (Canboro) and 12 (Fisherville) are all also in need of replacement. A new Caledonia station is planned to be built in 2022, as well as plans for an additional station and complement of apparatus south of the bridge should development continue.

Apparatus

Stations in urban districts house one heavy rescue truck, one tanker and either two pumpers or one pumper and an aerial. Stations in rural districts house one pumper/rescue and one tanker, while also some have a light rescue/utility truck, which were left over from before pumper/rescues were implemented. These will be phased out.

Pumper - 9 total, carry firefighting equipment such as hoses and ground ladders, as well as gas detectors

Pumper/Rescue - 7 total, carry same complement as pumpers but with additional auto extrication tools, medical supplies, lights, fans and truck tools

Aerial - 2 total with plans for a third, 100 foot aerial platform capable of pumping 1050 gallons per minute

Rescue - 6 total, carry auto extrication equipment, medical supplies, fans, lights, truck tools, power tools, extra air bottles and hazmat equipment

Tanker - 11 total, carries 2000 gallons of water for rural firefighting operations
