HalfPagan
Half Pagan is a rock band based in New Orleans.
History[edit]
The band was formed when guitarist Michael Homan and vocalist Bart Everson started playing together in 2016. They chose the name Half Pagan because of Everson's role as a prominent member of the Neo-Pagan community, in contrast with Homan's status as a noted Bible scholar and theology professor at a Catholic university. As a duo, they began playing neighborhood bars on the solstices and equinoxes.
Everson performs under the stage name Editor B, a sobriquet originally earned in the production of the long-running underground television series, Rox.
After releasing their first album on the vernal equinox in 2018, they expanded to include bass player Mike Hogan of Egg Yolk Jubilee and cellist Kalypso Homan, who is also Michael Homan's daughter.
In March of 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the band released a song with accompanying music video under the title "Coronavirus in New Orleans." Gambit Weekly cited the song for its "idiosyncratic charm."[1]
Style[edit]
Half Pagan plays rock music with a blend of folk and punk influences. The majority of their original work is written by Homan, with additional contributions from Everson. Lyrical themes span a range of topics, from ancient Baylonian mythology to the demise of Laika, the first dog in space. Antigravity praised their "positive, lighthearted tunes" but also labelled their first album as "fucking odd," drawing comparisons to They Might Be Giants and Violent Femmes.[2]
Discography[edit]
- 20 March 2018: Lamentations
- 14 March 2020: Low End
All albums have been released on the band's own label, Šuranu Nekelmutum.
