Halkevleri (STK)

Halkevleri is a non-governmental organization (NGO) adopting a leftist ideology and agenda. Although the NGO declares to have been founded on the legacy of People's Houses (Turkish: Halkevleri; literally meaning "people's houses"), it should not be confused with the state institution People's Houses (1932-1951), as the latter were community institutions founded and administered by the Turkish state and entirely abolished in 1951.
1st era (1963–1980)
The non-governmental organization Halkevleri was opened in 1963 by civil society. It was totally independent of the government. Halkevleri acted as an umbrella organization of leftist movements powerful before 1980 Turkish coup d'état. The most prominent leftist revolutionary movement of Turkey, "Revolutionary Path" Devrimci Yol, was active in most Halkevleri branches. This was one of the main reasons for the closing of Halkevleri with the 1980 Turkish coup d'état.[1]
2nd era (1987–)
In 1987, Halkevleri was opened again by civil society. Today Halkevleri acts as an umbrella organization aiming to struggle for rights including the "right to free education", "right to free medical treatment", and "right to housing". The current leader is a lawyer, Oya Ersoy, who is known for human rights trials.[2]
