Dr. Halley M. Pontes is a psychologist conducting research in the field of behavioral addictions, focusing on Internet Gaming Disorder, Internet addiction, social media addiction, sex addiction, and work addiction. He worked as a University Lecturer in Psychology at Nottingham Trent University[1] from 2014 to 2019 and was a member of the International Gaming Research Unit. Currently, he works at the University of Tasmania as a Lecturer in Psychology [2]. Dr. Pontes is a founder and research director of Tasmania's first cyberpsychology and addictive disorders research laboratory, The International Cyberpsychology and Addictions Research Laboratory (iCARL).
Dr. Pontes is regarded as the first Portuguese researcher to investigate and publish on the issue of Internet addiction in Portugal[3]. During the course of his career, he has published well over 80 scientific studies in the field of behavioral addictions, and his studies have received extensive press coverage in several English-speaking countries and other countries around the world.[4][5][6] In 2019 he published in English a whole book on Internet addiction, [7] which was subsequently translated to Portuguese and published in Brazil.[8]
His research has granted him multiple international awards from different institutions. In 2016, he received from McGill University the Durand Jacobs Award for his outstanding contribution to the field of behavioral addictions.[9] More recently, he has received the 2019 Early Career Research Award from the Australian Psychological Society,[10] which is given to researchers whose achievements are outstanding and place them significantly ahead of their peers.
Education and career
Dr. Pontes received his BSc in Psychology in 2011 and MSc in Clinical Psychology in 2013 from the ISPA - Instituto Universitário in Lisbon, Portugal where he conducted the first scientific study on Internet addiction in Portugal in the context of his MSc research,[11] which was later published in the Journal of Behavioral Addictions,[12] a prestigious and specialized scientific journal in the field of behavioral addictions. His PhD in Psychology was awarded by Nottingham Trent University in 2017 where he developed his doctoral work in the psychometric assessment of Internet Gaming Disorder and Internet addiction. His Doctoral Thesis was titled "The Psychometrics of Internet addiction and Internet Gaming Disorder: a step towards measurement unification" [13]
He began lecturing to psychology students in 2014 while working on his PhD at Nottingham Trent University. However, in September 2016 he took on a full lectureship position in psychology at Nottingham Trent University, where he also gained his teaching qualifications, including the title Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
Over the course of his career, Dr. Pontes has contributed to many scientific journals by acting in the capacity of Editor, including journals like Journal of Behavioral Addictions,[14] International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health,[15] Aloma: Revista de Psicologia, Ciències de l'Educació i de l'Esport, [16] Dr. Pontes is also engaged with the gaming industry in an independent capacity and has consulted for Electronic Sports League in Germany to help them develop and implement responsible gaming practices among their users through the Smart Gaming awareness campaign. He has also independently consulted for the British government on various issues related to technological addictions among youth, which resulted in two reports published by the UK Parliament (Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee) providing written evidence on problematic use of social media in adolescence [17] and digital and gaming addiction [18]

Dr. Pontes' research focuses on applying psychological theory and methodology to understand excessive and addictive behavior without the use of substances. His research interests include cyberpsychology, mental health, well-being, psychopathology, behavioral addictions, gambling disorder, Internet Gaming Disorder, Internet addiction, exercise addiction, game transfer phenomena, and sex addiction. Overall, he has published over 60 refereed journal articles, one book, 13 book chapters and presented his research on numerous events [19][20]. He is best recognised for his work on Internet Gaming Disorder where he explores how psychology and statistical can help better diagnosing and assessing the extent of problems caused by disordered gaming.
