"Hallucinate" is a song by English singer Dua Lipa from her second studio album Future Nostalgia (2020), serving as the seventh track of the album.
Background and composition[edit]
Lipa stated that she is most excited to perform "Hallucinate" on tour.[1] Lipa spoke to Apple Music about the song:
This is quite different from the other songs on the album, which all tie in together. But I just wanted this to be like a fun '90s dance track. It felt so freeing. This one's my festival song. Whenever I make songs, I imagine what they’d be like if I performed them at Glastonbury. I knew there was no way I could do a festival without this song.[2]
Musically, "Hallucinate" is an electronic-influenced[3] disco-house[4][5] beach pop,[6] dance-pop[6] and synth-pop song.[7] It's production consists of a "stutter-riddled" chorus, "electrified" and "pulsating" beats,[8][7] a "funky" melody,[9] a synth baseline,[10] "sparkling" synths and a "thumping" bass.[8] In terms of music notation, the song was written in the key of B♭ minor with a tempo of 122 beats per minute.[11] The Guardian compared the chorus of "Hallucinate" to Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" saying it "seems to enter an interstellar dimension."[12] The Line of Best Fit called it "a blissful early '00s club floor-filler."[13] Crack wrote that the song sounds like a Daft Punk remix of Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005).[14] Uproxx commented on the song's aesthetic calling it "neon-tinted."[15] Billboard stated that it borrows from "Kylie Minogue's euphoric '90s dance formula" as well as comparing the song's chorus to Lady Gaga.[9] It was also compared to Katy Perry by ABC.[16] Wonderland wrote that it channels 2000s pop music as well as comparing the song to Atomic Kitten.[6] Gay Times compared the song's production to Booty Luv and attitude to Girls Aloud.[17] British GQ described the song as a festival opener and club closer while also comparing it's production to Kaytranada.[18] Teen Vogue wrote about the song's lyrical content saying Lipa is "wrapped up in an all-consuming, addictive love" while also calling it a "a sticky sweet psychedelic song".[3]
Critical reception[edit]
Glamour ranked "Hallucinate" as Lipa's tenth best song stating it "is pure adrenaline from start to finish, with a chorus that explodes like a cannonball."[19] Neil Z. Yeung of AllMusic called it a "rapturous out-of-body rave."[20] Writing for Rolling Stone, Brittany Spanos called it a "gorgeous euphoria."[21] In a positive review from Idolator, Mike Nied called the song a "delight" and a "glory."[7] Jamie Parmenter of Vinyl Chapters also gave a positive review complimenting its soundscapes and production as well as calling it a "forward-thinking" track.[22] The song received a negative review from Under the Radar 's Conrad Duncan, saying it imitated the 2000s too much.[4] "Hallucinate" received two positive reviews from PopMatters with Nick Malone calling it an "obvious hit" and Evan Sawdey calling it an "album highlight."[23][24] Slant Magazine's Sal Cinquemani gave the song a mixed review calling it "generic" and a "bald-faced gesture."[5] Gabbie Nirenburg of No Ripcord stated that "Hallucinate" is the strongest track on Future Nostalgia.[25] David Levesley of British GQ wrote that the song "will live longer than any of its inspirations".[18]
