Hallyuworld
Hallyuworld is an under-construction tourist complex in South Korea, funded by the Gyeonggi provincial government on 990,000 square meters of land. It is located in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. The objective of Hallyuworld is to globalize Hallyu. The main facilities will be a theme parks, hotels, commercial facilities, and content production facilities.
HallyuWorld is said to mimic the Universal Studio Tour or Disneyland. The project's aim is to build "a world-class cluster of cultural and tourist infrastructure and a center of mass culture in East Asia".[1]
History
The plan for Hallyuworld was first proposed in 2008. In January 2013, the Korea Tourism Organization was contracted to build the complexes. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced a US$635.18 million project to support the construction of a concert arena dedicated to hosting K-pop performances, with the aim of attracting tourists and supporting the spread of Hallyu.[2]
In December 2013, it was reported that the project had made little progress, and its two core projects were put on hold. The government announced that the K-pop arena was postponed due to the feasibility study being delayed. The construction of the MICE complex was also stopped.[3] The MVL Hotel Kintex, located in the heart of Hallyuworld, opened in Ilsan.[4]
In 2017, CJ ENM announced that it would invest 1.4 trillion won (US$1.2 billion) into HallyuWorld for the construction of commercial facilities on 300,000 square meters of land.[5]
