Halpatter Brewing Company is a craft brewery in Lake City, Florida.[1][2][3]

History[edit]

Halpatter Brewing Company was first conceived by brothers-in-law Chris Candler and Jeremy Gable in 2013.[4] Chris and Jeremy wanted to make their own beer but had never thought about establishing a brewing company. They chose the name Halpatter after the Seminole chief Halpatter Tustenugee, meaning Warrior Chief Alligator, whom was one of the first settlers in present-day Lake City. Jonny Frazier, also a native of Lake City, combined his experience as an engineer and homebrewer with Chris and Jeremy to further the idea of a brewing company. Jonny created the brewery's brewing system, keg washer, grain mill and other equipment. Halpatter debuted their brew at a beer festival in February 2016 with success.[5][6]

Halpatter acquired a lease on a building in Lake City to serve as the Halpatter Brewing Company. The building was built in 1939 and completed in 1940 as Lake City's city hall. The building was repurposed for several uses after being Lake City's city hall until it became dormant. Halpatter Brewing Company occupying the building since 2017 has saved it from being torn down by renovating it to adapt as a brewery.

In August 2018 Halpatter partnered with Cone Distributing to distribute Halpatter's beer in Cone's distribution network.[7] Halpatter won a 2019 Best Florida Beer silver medal for the brew O'Leno Cream Ale.[8] Halpatter was forced to adjust its hours and operations in March 2020 under a restaurant license due to the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic.[9][10]

Halpatter has brewed a variety of IPAs and ales named after local Columbia County places. Halpatter started canning their beer in 2019 and has entered the Tallahassee brew market.[11][12][13] Several brews at Halpatter include:

  • Old School Session IPA, a brew named after the old Florida Agricultural College of Lake City and predecessor of University of Florida
  • 16 Springfields Imperial IPA, named after 16 Springfield rifles found in Lake DeSoto in downtown Lake City.[14]
  • Satan's Panties, IPA
  • Drunk With Power, Russian imperial stout named after an article about Halpatter and a Columbia County business board.
