Ham Radio Prep
Ham Radio Prep is a United States-based business established in 2017 to assist people interested in obtaining a Federal Communications Commission-issued amateur radio license. The owners of Ham Radio Prep say.[1] they started their business after observing the damage from the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season, leaving them to think that amateur radio was a way for people to be able to communicate with each other in difficult times. After reading stories about how ham operators saved lives with their communications expertise, the team that formed the business learned more about the activity and then obtained their own FCC licenses.
The business partners formed Critical Communications Media LLC, a California limited liability company, and set up a website in 2018 that offers online instruction at present for the entry-level Technician class amateur radio license, as well as the mid-level General class FCC license. As of June 2020, the business is planning on launching an instruction course for the Extra class FCC license in the summer of 2020 [2]. A new FCC question pool for the Extra class course will be used beginning July 1, 2020 [3]
Ham Radio Prep uses a system that differs from other past amateur radio license preparatory websites in that it uses actual learning-based engines as well as features that it says sets it apart from the rest.[1]
[edit]
During the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak worldwide, the owners of Ham Radio Prep reduced the cost of their online cost by 60 percent, but also offered free scholarships to many who were out of work or caring for family members during the pandemic.[4]. The business noted at the time in spring 2020 [4] that in a comparison of the time period from March 5-13, 2020, to the same days in 2019, the number of persons signing up for amateur radio license courses on HamRadioPrep.com soared more than 700 percent since news of the coronavirus outbreak was being reported by the media. At the same time, the FCC also was showing a 7.1 percent percent uptick in new amateur licensees in the first week of March in 2020 vs the same week in 2019 [4]
Application development[edit]
Ham Radio Prep launched an online and offline Android app on the Google Play Store in February 2020 [5] and is working on an iOS version of the app. The app is offered for free and includes all test questions for the Technician and General FCC exams and simulates the tests given by FCC-approved Volunteer Examiner Coordinators. In May 2020, the business opened up its simulated FCC exams on its website for free, too.
