Hamalu Jamatia (born 15 October 1997), is a Tiprasa Student leader from Tripura. He is an Indian student leader and activist serving as the General Secretary of the Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), a prominent indigenous student organisation in the state of Tripura, India. He is known for his advocacy on behalf of indigenous student rights, cultural identity, language issues, and socio-political matters affecting the indigenous communities of Tripura.

Role and leadership

As General Secretary of the Twipra Students’ Federation, Jamatia plays a key role in shaping the organisation’s strategies and public engagements. The TSF, established on 25 October 1968, represents the interests of indigenous students and has historically campaigned on issues ranging from educational rights to cultural preservation.

Activism and Campaigns

During his tenure, Jamatia has led and articulated TSF’s positions on several significant causes:

Language and Education: Jamatia has been at the forefront of protests demanding the implementation of the Roman script for the Kokborok language in educational examinations, highlighting difficulties faced by students when question papers are set only in the Bengali script. In March 2025, under his leadership, the TSF announced an indefinite strike and road blockades across Tripura to press for recognition of Roman script for Kokborok examinations.

Cultural Identity: He has emphasised the need to preserve indigenous heritage and identity. For example, Jamatia strongly opposed the government’s decision to lease the historic Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya Museum and Cultural Centre (Pushpabanti Palace) to a private entity, arguing that such heritage should not be compromised for commercial development.

Illegal Migration: In mid-2025, Jamatia, along with TSF leadership, launched the “Clean Illegal Immigrants Drive-Out Mission,” urging the Tripura government to implement the Ministry of Home Affairs directive on identifying and deporting illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, citing concerns for demographic balance and indigenous land rights.

Commemorative Events: He has also guided TSF in observing remembrance events, such as designating 8 January as “Black Day” to honour indigenous activists who died in the 2019 protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Social Issues: Jamatia has addressed broader social controversies, including TSF’s rejection of calls to condition Scheduled Tribe (ST) status on religious conversion, asserting that such demands were discriminatory and constitutionally unsound.
