The Hamburg Bit-Bots are a robot research competition team from the Universität Hamburg, Germany. Since 2012 they have participated regularly in the RoboCup Humanoid Kid Size league, which is a competition in robot soccer.[1][2] The members consist of volunteer students from the university's department of informatics.[3]
History
The team has participated in every RoboCup World Championship since 2012.[4] In the early years, the hardware of the open robot platform DARwIn-OP was used with a custom software stack.[1] Between 2015 and 2018, the members designed two custom robot architectures, "Hambot" [5] and "Minibot".[6] The software stack was rebuilt from scratch in 2017 using the Robot Operating System (ROS) to improve standardization and promote code sharing within the RoboCup community.[7] Following the ROS adaptation, the team began working on the Wolfgang-OP, a descendant of the NimbRo Open Platform, which completely replaced their previous robots.[8][9][10]
In 2020, the Hamburg Bit-Bots achieved second place at the Brazil Open tournament.[11][4] This was followed by third place in the RoboCup 2021 Humanoid Kid Size League and first place at the Brazil Open 2021. These were simulated using the Webots Simulator due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[12][13][14][15][16] The team also competed successfully in multiple Iran Open[17][18] and German Open tournaments.[18][19]
Research
The Hamburg Bit-Bots' research encompasses various fields, including computer vision, machine learning, motion planning, and mechatronics.[20][21][22][23][24][9] They were pioneers in using convolutional neural networks in robot soccer, and among the first teams to widely adopt the Robot Operating System.[24][23] The ImageTagger (see List of manual image annotation tools) is an open source software developed by the team for collaboratively annotating images for machine learning algorithms in computer vision.[20][25] It has also been adopted in other fields.[26][27][28][29][30]
