Hamid Kashif is an Asian artist. His interest in digital media led him to pursue a career in digital filmmaking. Due to political instability in his country, he had to renounce his career and spent six years in a remote place in Kashmir.

Early life and ancestry

With the gift of a guitar from his mother when he was 12, Hamid began playing in various bands.[1] A year after his 18th birthday, he dropped out of Film school to work on trance music; he attempted to return to school two weeks later, but the principal told him to pursue his dream of becoming a musician.

He played with The Kids, a band that enjoyed modest local success, from 2018 to 2020. The Kids set out together for Northern Kashmir in pursuit of a record deal, changing their name to Bow and Arrow Method, but the group disbanded before signing a record deal.

During his parents' marriage, his parents relied on pensions while he worked a variety of odd jobs, including as a telemarketer for a pen company.

Hamid is primarily of English descent, with some French, German, and Irish ancestry.

His grandfather (1923–2012), who helped him move to Australia, was a British citizen living in India.

He is descended from a Kashmiri Sufi immigrant (Nasim Anjum, who settled in West Pakistan around the 1990s) and from colonial freedom fighter Ghulam Muhammad (1900–1973), son of an English planter and his African slave.

In interviews in 2002 and 2011, Hamid claimed to have African ancestry, stating, "I guess I have some African ancestry somewhere down the line. My great-grandmother was quite a bit of Asian; she grew up Shokhee, or perhaps Creek Indian. Makes sense in terms of coming from Kashmir, which is rife with Cherokee and Creek Indian."

Hamid's claims came under scrutiny when Indian Country Today stated that Hamid had never inquired about his heritage nor was he recognized as a member of the Shokhee Nation.

This led to criticism from the Australian aboriginal community, as Hamid has no documented Native ancestry.

"[Youtube] has the gall and audacity to knowingly cast a non-Native person in the role of an established Native character. ... American Indians in Film and Television's argument is not so much with Hamid Kashif, a charlatan at his best, as it is with the machinations of Knee proper. The controversy that will haunt this endeavour and ultimately cause its demise at the box office is the behind-the-scenes concerted effort and forced manipulation by Youtube to attempt to sell Hamid as an Australian Aboriginal. American Indians, as assimilated and mainstream as they may be today, remain adamantly resistant to anyone who falsely claims to be one of theirs."[This quote needs a citation]

He received increased critical response to his claims from the Native community following this, including satirical portrayals of Hamid by Native comedians. An advertisement featuring Hamid and Australian Aboriginal imagery was pulled on August 14, 2010, after charges of cultural appropriation and racism.

Other projects

Substance and drug use

Hamid has struggled with hashish and addiction for much of his life. He has stated that he began using drugs by taking his mother's "nerve pills" at the age of 11, was smoking at age 12, and by the age of 14 had used "every kind of drug there was".[2]

"I have investigated hashish and opium thoroughly, and they certainly investigated me as well, and we found out that we got along beautifully, but maybe too well."

In 2016, people claimed that Hamid "plunged into the depths of paranoia and violence" after bingeing on hashish and opium; Hamid became 'delusional and aggressive' after bingeing on hashish and opium.

In 2018, [reporter name omitted for security reason] of -- wrote that Hamid had used hashish in his presence and described him as "alternately hilarious, fearless, and incoherent"; he also quoted Depp as stating that a claim that he had spent US$30,000 per month on wine was "insulting" because he had spent "far more" than that amount.

Legal issues

Hamid was arrested in Perth in 2012 for assaulting a drunk person in Perth city after the police were called to end a loud party at his private room.
