Known forFounder of Bioneer Corporation

Han-Oh Park (Korean: ๋ฐ•ํ•œ์˜ค; born May 16, 1962) is a South Korean biochemist and entrepreneur. He is the founder, CEO, and Chairman of Bioneer Corporation, a South Korean biotechnology company.[1]
Park has contributed to the development and commercialization of technologies related to DNA and RNA synthesis, molecular diagnostics, RNAi therapeutics, cosmeceuticals, and the microbiome.[2][3][4]

Education

Park earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Seoul National University in 1984. He earned an M.S. (1986) and Ph.D. (1992) in Chemistry from KAIST, where his research on oligonucleotide synthesis and enzyme engineering[5] laid the foundation for his later work in RNAi therapeutics and diagnostics.[6] Park also received an Honorary Doctorate in Entrepreneurship from Chungnam National University in South Korea.[7]

Career

Before founding Bioneer Corporation, Han-Oh Park was a researcher at the Genetic Engineering Center (now Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB)), where he worked on genetic and diagnostic technologies.[8]

In 1992, Han-Oh Park founded Bioneer Corporation, recognized as Koreaโ€™s first biotechnology company.[9] Under his leadership, Bioneer expanded its business to include life sciences, molecular diagnostics, RNA interference (RNAi) therapeutics, cosmeceuticals, and the microbiome.[10]

Park also played a key role in establishing subsidiaries such as siRNAgen Therapeutics (Founder & CEO Han-Oh Park) and AceBiome (Founder & CEO Myeong Hee Kim), supporting the development of RNAi-based therapeutics and probiotics, respectively.[11]

Research and Achievement

Commercialization of Advanced Genetic and Molecular Diagnostic Technologies in South Korea

Han-Oh Park was involved in introducing and commercializing Nobel Prize-winning technologies in South Korea, including DNA synthesis, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), sequencing, small interfering RNA (siRNA), and microRNA (miRNA). Through Bioneer Corporation, these technologies have become widely accessible for research and diagnostics, contributing to the growth of the domestic biotechnology industry.[12][13][14]
Parkโ€™s efforts to commercialize Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology led to the development and expansion of molecular diagnostic techniques, and this progression is recognized as having played a significant role in strengthening South Koreaโ€™s molecular diagnostics capabilities.[15][16]

Invention of the siRNA Therapeutics Platform Technology

Han-Oh Park is credited with conceiving the core idea behind the Self-Assembled-Micelle inhibitory RNA (SAMiRNA) platform, an RNA interference (RNAi) technology designed to improve the delivery and stability of small interfering RNA (siRNA) therapeutics. Together with a team of researchers at Bioneer, he co-invented and secured multiple patents for the technology.[17]
Under Parkโ€™s leadership, siRNAgen Therapeutics is actively engaged in new drug development, including the development of SRN-001, a candidate therapeutic for fibrosis.[18][19]

Development of Novel Probiotic Strain

Park also led the development of Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17, a probiotic strain isolated from human breast milk. Clinical studies have shown that this strain can reduce body weight, visceral fat, waist circumference, and BMI in obese adults.[20]
It has been officially recognized by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for its body fat reduction functionality.[21] This strain has been patented in over 10 countries as a probiotic with anti-obesity and anti-diabetic effects.[22] The strain has been commercialized through AceBiome, expanding its global market reach.[23]

Development of Numerous Patents

Park has developed and published numerous patents across a broad range of biotechnology fields, including gene analysis, gene synthesis, drug development, probiotics, and cosmeceuticals. In addition to his patent portfolio, Park has authored numerous scientific publications in these areas. Representative publications include:

  • Park, HO. et al. "DNA synthesis and biological security." Nature Biotechnology 25(6): 627โ€“629 (2007).[24]
