“Hand in Hand” (Mandarin: 手牽手) is a public service single released on May 21, 2003 for the fight against SARS. The song was composed and co-produced by Wang Leehom and David Tao, with Wang Leehom, David Tao and Isaac Chen as co-songwriters, and sung by 86 artists.[1].
Background and Issue
On November 16, 2002, there was an outbreak of SARS in Foshan City, Guangdong Province, China, and on March 14, 2003, the National Taiwan University Hospital attached to the College of Medicine reported the first case of SARS imported from outside Taiwan. On April 24, 2003, the Hoping Hospital reported an outbreak of nosocomial SARS infection and declared a hospital lockdown. On April 28 of the same year, the Information Bureau of the Government Information Office announced that the 14th Golden Melody Awards Ceremony would be postponed indefinitely due to the SARS epidemic. On May 7 of the same year, Wang Leehom and David Tao proposed the idea of co-creating a public service song to fight against SARS. On the 9th of the same month, Azio TV, the production unit of the 14th Golden Melody Awards, expressed its full support for the release of this public service song. On the 12th of the same month, Wang Leehom and David Tao started to work on the song. On the 13th of the same month, Azio TV announced that more than 80 artists would participate in singing this charity song.
On the 15th of the same month, the song "Hand in Hand" was completed. On the 16th of the same month, 81 singers gathered at Nangang 101 in Taipei City, Taiwan to record the chorus of the song, after which the singers went into the studio to record their solo parts. On the 20th of the same month, the mastering of the song was completed. On the 21st of the same month, the song was premiered on all major radio stations in Taiwan, and the music video for the song was premiered on Azio TV’s variety show "Asian Entertainment Center" (Mandarin: 亞洲娛樂中心). On the 30th of the same month, the song's promotional single was made available to all Taiwanese for free, with a total circulation of about 600,000 copies. On August 2 of the same year, the 14th Golden Melody Awards ceremony was held at the National Taiwan University of Sport, where Chyi Chin (Mandarin: 齊秦) and the Shin took the stage to perform the song, with the artists on stage singing along[2]
