Hank Jones (Actor, Singer, Songwriter, Genealogist) new article content ...

Hank Jones was one of the "Disney Stock Company" of character actors often used in the studio's live-action features in the 1960s-1980s. Walt cast him himself in his last personally-produced movie "Blackbeard's Ghost" in 1966 in which he played the wimpy head of the track team, "Gudger Larkin." Jones had begun his show-business career as a singer, recording on RCA Victor Records and featured for two years on the daily ABC-TV "Tennessee Ernie Ford Show" with his singing partner Dean Kay. He then was a familiar face as an actor on many TV shows of the period, having recurring roles on "My Three Sons" with Fred MacMurray and "The Patty Duke Show." Hank also guest-starred on other sit-coms, such as “The Love Boat,” "Petticoat Junction," "Mork and Mindy," "Love-American Style," "The Jeffersons,"”No Time For Sergeants,””Family Affair,” and "Nanny and the Professor," and dramatic shows such as "Mod Squad" and "Emergency." He made quite a few motion pictures during that period, among them MGM’s "Girl Happy" with Elvis Presley, 20th Century Fox's Academy Award winning epic "Tora Tora Tora," Universal’s “Young Warriors,” and Paramount’s "Village of the Giants" (once voted one of the "50 Worst Movies of All Time!!!" – an honor of which he is especially proud). Over the years, Hank Jones has worked with such luminaries as Robin Williams, Bob Hope, Patsy Cline, Ron Howard, Henry Fonda, Minnie Pearl, William Frawley, Peter Ustinov, Dizzy Gillespie, George Raft, Joe E. Brown, Walter Brennan, Buddy Ebsen, Suzanne Pleshette, William Demarest, Andy Devine, Tim Conway, Peter Lorré, Elsa Lanchester, Dick Clark, Vincent Price, Glen Campbell, Ringo Starr, and many others. A long-time member of ASCAP, Hank has written over 100 published songs, the best-known of which is Mel Tormé’s cult-classic “Midnight Swinger.” After "Blackbeard's Ghost," Jones became a familiar face in many other Disney movies: "The Shaggy D.A.," "Cat From Outer Space," "Herbie Rides Again," "No Deposit No Return," "The One & Only Genuine Original Family Band," “The Barefoot Executive,” and "Million Dollar Duck." He was honored to be asked to write the Foreword and contribute many reminiscences to Charles Tranberg’s book "Walt Disney & Recollections of the Disney Studios 1955-1980," recently published. Hank's own memoirs about his Disney days are included in his own book "Memories - The Show-Biz Part Of My Life." After retiring from acting in the 1980s (and becoming a three-day Jeopardy! champion), Hank Jones went on as "Henry Z Jones, Jr." to become a noted genealogist, an interest in which he had begun when he was eight years old and later pursued “in between pictures.” He was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists in 1986, of whom there are only 50 in the entire world. Hank specialized in tracing and writing about 18th century German immigrants to colonial America called the Palatines, and his two volume set The Palatine Families of New York - 1710 went on to win the coveted Donald Lines Jacobus Award as "Best Genealogical Book of the Year" when published. His two books on "Psychic Roots: Serendipity & Intuition in Genealogy" were huge cross-over sellers (now in their 9th printings) and dramatized on NBC TV's "Unsolved Mysteries." Hank continues to write books and articles on genealogy and give talks and seminars around the country on family history and his Disney experiences.
