The Hankou reprisal massacre were a series of killings committed by an enraged mob of Chinese civilians and soldiers against a group of 26 Japanese soldiers on August 19, 1945, four days after Emperor Hirohito announced that Japan would be surrendering.[Note 1] The killings were done in revenge for Japanese war crimes committed during Japan's invasion and occupation of China.[1]
A massive crowd of Chinese people watched, all 26 Japanese soldiers captured by the mob were killed, with some being brutally tortured beforehand. Most of the victims were killed in groups of four.
- Four were forced to their knees and beheaded.
- Four were tied to wooden posts and shot in the back of the head.
- Four had their arms and legs broken and amputated while still conscious, and were then made to bleed to death.
- Four were castrated and had their genitals shoved in their mouths. They then had their hands and feet cut off. All of them bled to death.
The remaining 10 Japanese soldiers had their eyes gouged out before being bayonetted by Chinese soldiers.[1]
Notes[edit]
- ↑ The incident at Hankou does not meet the legal definition of reprisal, an illegal act conducted to dissuade an enemy nation from performing its own illegal acts. The massacre was not officially sanctioned by the Chinese military or government, and there was no explicit intention for the actions of Chinese troops there to have a political effect on the enemy's conduct.
