Hannah Elyse Simpson (born November 18, 1984) is a Jewish transgender rights advocate and activist. She is also a journalist known for her editorial's, writing contributions, television news interviews, and advocacy.[1][2][3] She identifies as a Jewish transgender bisexual/pansexual woman.[1][4]

She was a medical student at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine when she came out publicly as a transgender woman and she left medical school in 2015.[2][5][6]

The Red Cross interviewed Simpson and quoted her as saying "I am visible and open because not hiding my past might help others to stop hiding their futures."[7]

Advocacy for transgender rights[edit]

Simpson compares gender identity to Handedness. She will ask someone to write their name with their non-dominant hand and then when the person is not able to write correctly she will ask that person “How did you know that wasn’t working?” After which most people would say "I just knew." She says at an early age in life around the age of 5 we just knew we were right or left handed. She says that this is the same when it comes to Gender identity.[8]

She was a special guest for the Silicon Valley Jewish Film Festival introduced by Ken Yeager about the 2018 documentary 'Family in Transition'.[9]

Simpson was listed by Metro Weekly as 30 Amazing People Looking to Create Change in the LGBT Community[10]

Documentaries and media[edit]

Simpson speaks of her transition in a short seven-minute documentary by Refinery29 in 2015. She says that it was tough to live in the places that she lived before residing in New York City prior to laser hair removal and injectable hormones[11]

She was a guest on the MSNBC Melissa Harris-Perry show titled "The Politics of Navigating Identity". Simpson explains the proper usage of gender pronouns and the suggestion to ask a person what their gender pronouns are.[12][13]

Political involvement[edit]

Simpson worked as an organizer for Hillary Clinton in 2016.[14][15]

Personal life[edit]

Simpson is a youth mentor, marathoner and small business owner.[citation needed] She volunteers with American Red Cross.[16] She was a former coordinator for the Trans Lifeline[17]
