Hannah Faith Yata (born 1989) is a half-Japanese-American artist known for her large-scale, surreal oil paintings.[2] She is based in New York City.[3]
Her work has been published in Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, and Vice.[4]
Early life and education
Hannah Yata was born in 1989 in Douglasville, Georgia. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in painting from the University of Georgia in 2012.
Artistic style and themes
Yata's work is known for its large-scale, surreal oil paintings that often feature phantasmagorical female figures intertwined with animal and plant life.[3] Critics have noted her work's "psychedelic wonderlands" and exploration of themes like the feminine, nature, spirituality, and mythology.[5]
The art publication Vice described her paintings as "fantastical" and noted that they "push back against the patriarchy."[6] Similarly, It's Nice That characterized the themes in her work as a "dance between rage and ecstasy."[5] The artist often uses the female figure as a metaphor for "mother nature" to explore ecological themes and question traditional femininity.[7]
