Hannan's Pygmy Squid Kodama Jujutsu[edit]

Hannan’s Pygmy Squid (also known as Kodama jujutsu) is one of the two new pygmy squids that have been discovered in the Ryukyu archipelago in Japan. Specifically found in the coral reefs off the coast of Okinawa, Kodama jujutsu is of a newly discovered species within a completely new genus[1].

The Kodama genus is named after tree spirits, which in Japanese folklore are said to live in age-old trees and whose appearance is an indicator of a healthy forest[2]. The jujutsu part of the name is based on its hunting method, which resembles the preying method of the Japanese martial art. ‘Jiu-jitsu revolves around grappling and using your opponent's strength, and the Kodama jujutsu preys on shrimp larger than itself by grappling with its small arms,’ said Jeffrey Jolly of the Marine Climate Change Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and technology (OIST)[3]. The squid can be found hunting and foraging after sunset.[4]

The Kodama jujutsu can grow to approximately 0.5 inches in length. It has eight arms and two tentacles which are covered in suckers. It has a golden or yellow-orange body covered in dark brown or orange spots. Its eyes can appear as either silver or a dark green depending on the angle.

Brandon Ryan Hannan first noticed the squid while taking underwater pictures in the Ryukyu Islands in 2019[5].
