Happy Mag is an Australia based online music and youth culture magazine that predominantly publishes independent news, music reviews, and feature articles.[1] Founded by Radi Safi[2] in 2014, and based in Sydney, Australia, Happy Mag has since grown to be considered a tastemaker in Australian music,[3] featuring music from both established and emerging talent in the music industry. Happy Mag has established itself as a leading music and media blog, with a growing loyal readership of over 2 million page views annually.[4] Happy Mag is a part of the VICE Blogging Network and Hype Machine.[5]

Happy Mag's editorial team is made up of young people who actively contribute in the arts community, as well as emerging journalists and established writers.[6] The publication has quickly become a trusted source of information in the NSW music industry, with MusicNSW writing that Happy Mag is "a leading taste-maker in the emerging music space"[7].

In 2019, Happy Mag is turning 5 years old, and to celebrate they will be hosting a birthday party at Kings Cross Hotel in Sydney, Australia.[8]

Print Magazine

Happy Mag print magazine launched in January 2016 with Courtney Barnett on the front cover, and 12 print issues have since been released, with Issue 12 being released in August 2019.[9] Happy Mag hosts launch parties for the release of each print magazine, inviting both established and emerging artists to perform,[10] with a passionate focus on helping to launch young Australian musician's careers.

Happy Mag Issue Two was released in April 2016, with DMA's on the front cover.[11] The launch party that accompanied its release was held at The Union Hotel, and hosted performances from Bec Sandridge, Julia Why?, Le Pie, and more.[12] In September 2016, Issue Three was released, featuring JAALA on the front cover.[13] A special free map-fold edition, Issue 3.5, was also released, featuring Marcus Whale on the cover.[14]

In April 2017, Happy Mag released Issue Four, with Julia Jacklin on the cover.[15] The magazine was launched at a party at The Botany View Hotel, with performances from local acts such as The Uplifting Bell Ends and Nick Nuisance & The Delinquents.[16] July 2017 saw the release of Issue Five with A.B. Original on the cover,[17] the launch party took place at The Lady Hampshire, and hosted performances from bands such as The Ruminaters and The Jim Mitchells.[18]

Happy Mag Issue Six was launched at The Lady Hampshire in December 2017,[19] and featured Stella Donnelly on the cover.[20] In March 2018, Issue Seven, with Baker Boy on the cover,[21] was launched at Young Henrys.[22] In June 2018, Issue Eight: The Photo Issue was released, featuring Isabella Manfredi of The Preatures on the cover.[23] The launch of Issue Eight was hosted in collaboration with Vivid Sydney at The Lady Hampshire, and hosted performances from bands such as Shining Bird and Zeahorse.[24][25]

In October 2018, Issue Nine was released, featuring Tkay Maidza on the cover.[26] The launch was held at Golden Age Cinema and Bar in Surry Hills, and hosted performances from Georgia June, Eagle Eye Jones, and Otis Thomas.[27] Issue Ten: The Drug Issue was launched at The Marlborough Hotel[28] in February 2019.[29] It contained various feature articles surrounding the topic of drugs, as well as features on the likes of Richard Di Natale and George Clinton. In May 2019, Issue Eleven: The Photo Issue was released, featuring Emerson Snowe on the cover.[30] It was launched at The Marlborough Hotel in collaboration with Vivid Sydney.[31]

Happy Mag's most recent print release was Issue 12: The Sex Issue. Released in August 2019, it featured interviews with artists such as Alex Cameron and Amyl and The Sniffers, as well as various other articles broadly surrounding the topic of sex.[32] The magazine had two alternate covers, one featuring an artwork by Jess Cochrane,[33] and one featuring Amy Taylor, the front-woman of Amyl and The Sniffers, photographed by Charlie Hardy.[34] The launch party for Issue 12 took place at The Marlborough Hotel in Newtown[35] and hosted numerous popular Australian bands, such as A. Swayze & The Ghosts, Flyying Colours, Lupa J, and more.[36]

Each issue of Happy Mag is available as a print magazine, but online copies have also been archived by the National Library of Australia[37].

Needle In The Hay

In 2016, Happy Mag launched Needle In The Hay, an annual competition that gives emerging artists an opportunity to get their music pressed onto vinyl.[59] The competition has a prize pool worth over AU$20,000, with a first place prize of 250 12" vinyl pressings, and runner up prizes of high quality recording gear and studio packages.[60] The aim of Needle In The Hay is to help champion emerging Australian artists.[61]
