History[edit]
Harbeth was founded by H.D Harewood (previously Head of BBC Loudspeaker Development through the 60/70's) in 1977[3]. Under Harewood's management, the BBC's Research Department had pioneered the use of boxtrene plastic as a cone material and incorporated it in the classic BBC monitors of that era. Harewood's further investigations exposed polypropylene as a potential material, and the Harbeth company founded to commercialise it.
After Harewood's commercial predicament, now he was well past retirement age, Alan Shaw (current owner) took over the helm, managing to steadily grow and evolve the business.
Technology[edit]
Harbeth use 'Radial' and 'Radial2' cone technology in all of their loudspeakers. Harbeth's advanced cone technology project created RADIAL- the secret-formula used in Harbeth's exclusive bass/midrange drive units. Over five man-years of Harbeths's dedicated, world class research (part-funded by the UK Government) investigated all loudspeaker diaphragm materials. None met the Harbeth requirement for clarity and neutrality, so Harbeth RADIAL was born- and even further advanced in RADIAL2. Pistonic behaviour is critical across the entire audio range - so only with RADIAL cones is it possible to achieve the freshness of live sound.

Harbeth manufacturers product's for both hi-fi and studio use. The core product range consists of: P3ESR, Compact 7ES-3, Monitor 30.2 Domestic and the Monitor 40.2. Twenty-seventeen marked a magnificent year for Harbeth, as the company celebrated it's 40th anniversary with the release of a special anniversary product in limited veneers including: P3ESR in Olive Wood, Monitor 30.2 in silver Eucalyptus, Super HL5 Plus in Walnut and the Monitor 40.2 in three special veneers.
Harbeth's professional studio range consists of: Monitor 20.1 pro, Monitor 30.1 pro, Monitor 30.1 powered and the Monitor 40.2 pro.
